Prototype 2 Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

As far as single player experiences go, if you enjoy action or open world titles, Prototype 2’s gritty and gory take on both genres will make this revenge quest one of the best in recent memory.

Having no impact is kind of the M.O. of Prototype 2. I enjoyed leveling up Heller and completing side quests, but none of it really meant anything to me. Outside of the Trophies I have for my efforts, I doubt I'll remember much of Prototype 2's sterile side missions and curse word-laden dialogue. Prototype 2 is fun, but it sure is forgettable.

Prototype 2 is anything but subtle. The follow-up to Radical Entertainment’s 2009 murder simulator rarely gives you a moment to breathe without gunfire, rockets and tendrils of errant intestines bursting from the screen. Its anarchic approach to gameplay can grate on you, but without a meaty plot to hang its crimson hat on, it’s also the open world adventure’s most defining asset. The question is: does the bloody sequel do enough to build upon its shallow predecessor, or is it simply another dose of forgettable fun?

Radical’s Prototype 2 improves vastly on a lot of the formula that made the first outing good; better and sexier powers, more stuff on screen to play with, addictive collectibles and fun bonus objectives, rewarding and pip-boy-esque mutations and, frankly, a better all-round character in James Heller. I can’t comment on the RADNET events that will be rolling out week after week though because no code was supplied with this review copy, and that’s a tragedy because it contains something ...

As the old adage goes, absolute power corrupts absolutely, but having absolute power in Prototype 2 is so damn liberating, that it's hard to care about anti-hero Sgt. James Heller's gradual downward spiral as his humanity ebbs away. As a lead character, he's hardly the most charismatic protagonist and you get a genuine sense that he's actually a bit of an asshole. To be fair, he's a man driven to the edge having lost his family after returning from a tour in Afghanistan, as well as finding Ne...
