R-Type Dimensions Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
If you have any fondness for the series, or if you’re just looking for a solid side-scrolling shooter that’s about as hard as can be, R-Type Dimensions faithfully re-creates the original experience and before long you’ll be wondering why you did this to yourself.
Whether or not R-Type Dimensions is the game for you depends on your budget, your gaming tastes and your sense of nostalgia. If you fondly remember the R-Types of old and have been itching to feel that sense of intense difficulty again on your console, then you’d be crazy not to download this one. But if you’re not a fan of the genre or prefer the fast-paced vertical shooters like Ikaruga, you might be disappointed with R-Type Dimensions’ style. But one thing’s for sure. If developers are going to remake a classic arcade game, this is the approach to take.
For a 22-year-old game it stands up remarkably well, but it's a shame that a few omissions prevent R-Type Dimensions from being all it could have been.
Coin-op classics R-Type and R-Type II come together as R-Type Dimensions, with original 2D and new, fully-enhanced 3D graphics. The classic game play remains untouched, while the all-new “Infinite” game mode allows even novice pilots the chance to complete both games in either solo or co-op play via Xbox Live.
Shooters do not offer the type of storyline depth, character customisation or lengthy gameplay we have become accustomed to in today’s video games, but R-Type Dimensions proves that there is still a place for the genre if it is handled the right way. R-Type Dimensions has been handled in just that fashion, providing fun bursts of action with enough modes and variety to make the entire package worthwhile.
The third title in the celebrated shmup series gets new character designs and soundtrack, but maintains its extremely high difficulty, offering no respite.
