The rub with Rainbow Moon is that it’s a serious time investment. But for gamers that do enjoy a stat-driven, equipment-changing, side quest-completing grind, spending time with Rainbow Moon is time well spent, especially considering its costs a meager $15. As many contemporary RPGs dash in a more accessible direction, Rainbow Moon remains stalwart as a champion of the past. Gamers rooted in the old-school owe it to themselves to play it.

Rainbow Moon is not a good choice for people who are looking for a narrative, but for fans of the old school, punishingly difficult, hardcore JRPGs, this is a nice throwback with an awful lot of raw gameplay behind it. It’s not so much a weekend buster as an entire holiday to work through, and as such, for its specific niche, it represents enormous value.
