Rollers of the Realm Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Rollers of the Realm is just as good as when I first encountered it at this year’s E3. It’s an enormously fun and creative take on two genres you would never think to see in bed together. The gameplay is tight and responsive, the boards are intricate and clever, and the splendid voice acting is an added delight. Rollers is in nearly every way more than you’d expect from a typical pinball game. At just $9.99, this a great holiday buy if you’re looking for a digital stocking stuffer or just want something fun and new.
Perfect for those who love pinball, and worth a look at those who may not love the genre. A clever mix of elements and control make this game an enjoy to play.
Rollers of the Realm seems like a crazy concept that sounds like nobody should ever attempt. You won't be saying that after you play it though. Chances are you'll wonder why nothing like this was thought of earlier. In its own way it could be described is genius. The script will have you laughing and the gameplay will have you engaged. It blew me away how invested I had become in a pinball. While the story might not be the most epic thing that you've ever played, Rollers of the Realm is definitely worth a shot.
This bizarre pairing of a pinball game, puzzle and RPG is far from being a match made in heaven, but it works... In a very strange way. A fun little story, cheap price and reasonably well thought out gameplay makes Rollers of the Realm a game you're going to want to try, if only because it's different.
Rollers of the Realm is much more than a pinball game. For the measly price of $9.99, it is absolutely worth getting even if pinball games aren't normally your thing, there is plenty here to enjoy anyway.
What the game lacks in telling an interesting story it makes up for in challenging gameplay, combined with creative levels and character specific attributes.
Hitting a wall with your pinball skills brings the entire game to a standstill. Earning extra money means replaying old areas until you can afford new items, and buying extra gear and weapons should theoretically help up your game. But apart from the mana reduction items, I didn't really notice much of a difference. It's hard to appreciate how your ball doing extra knockdown when you're concentrating on trying to aim a pinball at specific targets and locations.
Overall, while it is an interesting experiment, I found Rollers of the Realm to be somewhat uninteresting…and occasionally infuriating. However, I can’t call it a bad game. The mechanics and the gameplay are solid, and the concept, while unusual, is pulled off quite well here. The dull story and occasional reliance on luck are major turn-offs for me, though. It’s not a game for everyone; to get the most from this game, you already have to be a pinball fan…and I don’t know many pinb...
Not quite on a roll.
