Diablo clones are old and busted. Castle Crasher clones are the new hotness. There was a time when dungeon-crawling Diablo clones rampantly made their way through the PC and console market. [...]
Which brings me back to my original point that I am disappointed with this game. It doesn’t really fulfil what I’m looking for in a game that bears the Sacred franchise. By the same token, unless you’re a fan of the Sacred franchise this game doesn’t really offer anything that isn’t readily available in dozens of games this generation, including ports of the absolute classics of the genre.
A dispirited attempt at marrying the best of old-school brawlers like Streets of Rage with the obsession-inducing trappings of an action-RPG, Sacred Citadel had the potential to be so much more than it is. Plagued by a ho-hum delivery and combat occasionally interrupted by redeeming boss fights, it fails to distinguish itself.
Sacred Citadel, then, is certainly of interest from a game design standpoint, but more as a warning that sometimes what sounds like a good idea actually isn’t. RPG elements have become more and more common in other genres of video games, but in this example of the side-scrolling brawler, they just don’t work.
