Shiftlings - Enhanced Edition takes a wacky and weird concept and just runs with it. The result of doing so is a highly entertaining puzzle platformer whose general design and aesthetics meld together into something that is more than the sum of its parts. Although its potty-humour premise may not be for everyone and the cut scenes a bit ham-fisted and overacted, it’s the type of game that will suit just about anybody. Co-op titles are all the rage nowadays – and in Shiftlings, this is certainly the name of the game. In it, two alien janitors happen across a special drink known as Black Hola Cola, and when one of the extraterrestrials gulps the syrupy substance, his suit inflates like Violet from Willy Wonka. Funnily enough, the characters are tethered together, and so this enables them to shift their new-found weight between each other. Little do they know that they're contestants in a hot and popular game show, which is also named Shiftlings.
Shiftlings is a smartly made puzzle game with an endearing story and art style, but unintuitive controls and killer load times make the Wii U version a real struggle to get into.
Shiftlings’ size-swapping mechanic serves as a perfect metaphor for the game itself. Simply put, it lacks balance. The cute art style would make for a perfect parent-child co-op experience, but the skill required for certain platformer-specific puzzles makes it a bit too difficult for a younger child to master (and/or have fun). The story elements that are fleshed out don’t really amount to much. It would have been better served without the bloat of the story. From the opening cut scene through to the various platforming puzzles, Shiftlings feels like more than just a simple platformer with a gimmick. Instead of inserting a joke and then going about the level design like it never happened, here the joke is very integral part of the experience.
After consuming the universe’s fizziest drink, a pair of space engineers joined by an air hose are in a spot of trouble – gassy trouble. So gassy in fact, that one spacesuit is always inflated like a balloon – providing both a convenient explanation for the game’s main mechanic and the opportunity for heaping piles of lame fart jokes. Over the course of 50 levels, the purple and green heroes take on various obstacles by shifting the built up gas between their space suits.
