Shovel Knight Showdown Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

When I first heard of Shovel Knight Showdown, my first thought was of how unfair it is that Shovel Knight himself is relegated to being a simple assist trophy in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Meanwhile, other useless characters like Piranha Plant, Dark Pit, and two thirds of the Fire Emblem fighters are happily filling up undeserved spots in that game’s roster. Was this Yacht Club Games’ answer to all of the Shovel Knight fans begging for the character’s inclusion in a Smash game of any ki...

Shovel Knight Showdown brings yet more new content for fans of the shovel-wielding hero. While Treasure Trove owners will receive this update at no cost, is it

Showdown is a great first effort into multiplayer madness beyond co-op for Yacht Club Games that I am sure will carry lessons into their next project. Showdown is a compliment to the entire Treasure Trove package that does not encroach on the core experience. Some people will love Showdown’s addition and others will brush it off to the side. It’s like a cherry on top of an ice cream sundae; a sweet inclusion, but not essential to the overall enjoyment of the package.

Neal: It's absolutely jam-packed with features and if you're someone who already has Shovel Knight, it's a heck of a free addition. As a solitary game, it's a much harder sell. Like you said, it's more of a curio or bonus than something that could stand solely on its own.

This was a bonus mode, a quick novelty to supplement the main campaign rather than grab the spotlight. However, much like the playable boss characters morphing into full-on new releases, so too did this multiplayer mayhem transform into SHOVEL KNIGHT SHOWDOWN. A four-player local-co op platform fighter, the game shines as an excellent bonus for Shovel Knight fans. Where it stumbles is in its existence as a full-fledged game all on ...

If you have friends to play it with and really love Shovel Knight, you probably will eke some entertainment out of Shovel Knight Showdown. There’s plenty of content to unlock, too. It really needed to have online multiplayer to make an impact though, as it’s only really enjoyable when played with others. Still, the fact that it’s free if you have the Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove means it’s worth giving a go, but don’t expect it to keep you going back for more.
