As mentioned at the start of my review, without Libra of Souls, Soulcalibur VI would have been quite a disappointing entry in the series. It’s missing some modes that you just expect a fighting game to have as standard now, its character creation feels like a step-back, and visually it doesn’t really impress. Soulcalibur V is at its absolute best with friends, when it's testing your skill, reaction times and trash talking ability. The combat is still great and the graphics are still beautiful. Outside of that, it's a slight disappointment, as this is the weakest single player experience in the series yet. The game just never attempts to give us something we haven't seen before. It's more comfortable recycling the same old gameplay with a few additions pilfered from other trend-setting fighting games. And having been rescued from the jaws of retirement by vocal fans, Soul Calibur is back for a fifth instalment, bringing its own brand of clashing steel, historical pomp and flashy pyrotechnics kicking and screaming once more onto consoles across the land.
Players will rank up and earn points in all game modes offered in Soul Calibur V, except of course in tutorial mode. Ranking earns new titles for your player card, which is your ID in SC V, and unlocks items for creation mode. Creation mode is more robust compared to the previous installments in the series, offering you more tools for shaping your character. I spent a lot of time in the creation mode, constructing a ridiculous character honorably named, ShoomyZoomy.
