In the nearly year that I’ve spent donning a PlayStation VR Headset, most of the experiences I’ve played through have been of a seated nature. The few that required standing up still felt limited with how much the player can move and interact with the world. Virtual Reality technology still hasn’t progressed to the point where free range of movement can be enjoyed by players that might not have fully grown into their ‘VR legs’. Sparc is one of those rare titles that can introduce players into the realm of PSVR gaming and get them moving without giving off that floaty feeling that other titles ...
In some ways it’s refreshing to see all of the fluff cut out. There’s no lootboxes and the cosmetic options are slim. It’s all about the sport, and as long as there’s a playerbase there, I’ll be hopping in from time to time to see what’s up. Sparc has the potential to grow, but it needs all the help it can get from as many installbases it can get its hands on.
The advent of VR gaming has quite literally changed the way in which we experience games and in more ways than just placing the player within the game world.
While lacking in content and having some spotty controls, Sparc scintillates with a simple yet exhilarating sport that feels at home in virtual reality.
Sparc is a virtual reality version of Pong with Tron-like visuals. In a way, it's very similar to PlayStation VR Worlds' Danger Ball. You face off against an opponent, each standing at opposite ends of a long empty corridor, and you must throw a ball at your opponent in order to score points. That's the basic premise, but there's a little bit more to it than that.
Sparc is the first in what will hopefully become a burgeoning genre for virtual reality. It’s a frenetically charged competitive sport that doesn’t bog itself down with too many rules. At the same time, it’s a risky investment. I hate being a pessimist, but as soon as the number of active players begins to dry up, you’ll be left with an empty husk of a game.
Multiplayer in virtual reality is one of the more attractive concepts of the still-young gaming technology. Standing in a virtual space with another person is a strange experience, more personal than talking on a headset to another player. CCP Games recognizes this and has crafted a sports game that pits two players against one another in a surprisingly intimate and fun competition that feels like it belongs in VR, but little has been put in place to keep you coming back.
