We’re now rapidly approaching the two-year mark since the release of both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. In that time players have come to expect more. The honeymoon phase of “any VR is good VR” has passed for all but the most recent converts. So where are things going and who is going to take us there? One of the early standouts was Survios with Raw Data. Now they’re back with Sprint Vector. Will they head into the lead with their crazy racing game or fall back to the pack? Let’s find out.
Movement is one of the toughest things to get right in virtual reality right now. It can work like a charm in some cases, transporting you to a world that you feel fully immersed in as you interact with the environment around you. Or, it can knock you off guard and send you searching for the nearest toilet. Sprint Vector, the next PlayStation VR title from the developer of Raw Data, takes a huge risk in designing the entire experience around how you navigate it, and boy does it pay off. This is the next must-have virtual reality game.
With an endearing mixture of the bubblegum pop aesthetic of Jet Set Radio and an intuitive first person parkour system that is reminiscent of Mirror’s Edge,
Sprint Vector is a wonderful surprise and by far the best VR title I’ve played in 2018 so far. The feeling of movement is just so ridiculously fun and empowering yet precise and responsive at the same time. When it all comes together – the drifts, the jumps, and the well-timed manoeuvres – there’s honestly nothing else like it.
A milestone in fast action VR games, which solves most of the problems with motion sickness while also being an excellent first person racer.
The Sprint Vector experience serves the VR platform in a couple different ways. It fits into your home as a competitive romp among friends or online and as one of a growing number of virtual reality games that can be worked into a fitness program. It also supplies a combination of competition and match length that fits into VR arcades. Either way you slice it, Sprint Vector is a pretty great value that deserves a spot in the VR ecosystem's upper tier of games.
Sprint Vector may have a lot of problems; however, I think the pros outweigh the cons, especially when you consider that Survios has redefined VR movement with its "Fluid Locomotion" movement. The real issue is whether or not Survios was able to tackle a big problem in VR gaming successfully: in a reductive way yes -- yes they did. Several of the cons found in the game can indeed be fixed in future patches, however, the most significant risk that the game tackled was in-fact the game's movement. The few gameplay annoyances, exacerbated if you’re not playing under optimal PSVR conditions, is one of the drawbacks to Sprint Vector as a package. Even considering the learning curve — not insurmountable but not something novice virtual reality users will grok immediately — you’ll see everything that there is to see in the game within a few hours. A healthy community extends the replay value, but the asking price of $30 is steep for what’s available at launch.
