Some players might be put off by Spirit of the North due to how heavily it relies on its players to figure things out, but that’s also its biggest charm. You are in the shoes of a creature that can’t speak – and yet, as the game’s world and the story reveal itself to you, it speaks louder than any dialogue could. A colleague of mine, Leo Faria, was the one who first brought Spirit of the North from Infuse Studios to my attention. He described it as looking like a mix between Okami and Death Stranding. Naturally, this piqued my curiosity and had me scratching my head as to what kind of game this would be. After playing it, I can say that he isn’t entirely wrong with that description, but there’s a lot more to it than that. Or a lot less depending on your perspective.

Spirit of the North is a decent game let down some by subpar controls and underuse of the player character's abilities. It still manages to be somewhat entertaining but is far from a must-play.

Spirit of the North almost nails it. From the art to the characterisation, and even the wordless narrative structure, the developers have clearly put a lot of thought and creative energy into this, and it shows. You might want to play on another platform to get the full scope of the vision, because on Switch it is a little limited by the hardware, but even then, Spirit of the North has moments where it soars. It’s just unfortunate that it keeps crashing into walls along the way, as the developers tried to justify the existence of the game by what can only be termed “gameplay bits”, and…

Spirit of the North positions itself as a title similar to Journey, Abzu, or Rime, but it stumbles at the most basic levels of its gameplay.
