Splitgate 2 Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
If you want a free, slickly produced FPS with a neat twist, Splitgate 2 delivers. If you want a better but still free FPS, with the same twist but rougher edges, then the truth is you should check out the first game instead.

Splitgate 2 is a decent successor to the original that expands on it, but never really surpasses it.
What do you get when you combine Halo and Portal? Splitgate. What do you get when you inject an imbalanced battle royale mode and classes on top of that? Splitgate 2. The PvP portal slinging FPS has a sequel and it plays well with a sleek new slide and an Unreal Engine 5 graphical boost. I wish I enjoyed the color-spotched aesthetic and blown-up stages here, but I prefer the first game's intricate corridors and Halo-derived stage design better. Still, Splitgate 2 is a PvP shooter that plays brilliantly and has the makings of a fantastic game; it just needs some updates to address some balance ...
I fell in love with the original Splitgate during a time I was yearning for a compelling FPS experience. Eventually, I grew bored of it and stopped playing, but Splitgate 2 was immediately on my radar. A sequel boasting technical improvements over the original game with the addition of highly-requested features and a mysterious new mode? Count me in. After spending time with it, Splitgate 2 is a good but not great shooter. One with a rock solid foundation, but can’t help but repeat the same mistakes as the franchises it tries to supplant.
Splitgate 2 has many noteworthy things that are capable of bringing it to the top FPS spots. Unfortunately, its official launch is full of unbalanced game modes, a lackluster battle royale mode, and a lack of encouragement to use the game's iconic gimmick: portals.
Splitgate 2 is the sequel to the surprise sleeper hit Splitgate, an arena shooter that combined elements of games like Halo and Portal. It was a fun game, and the thought of a sequel that built upon that formula sounded incredibly enticing. Splitgate 2 officially launched last week, and after playing it in the pre-launch beta and post-launch window, I have some thoughts about how the sequel has turned out. Let’s get into it.
