For fans of SSX this new reboot shows that the series has taken a massive step forward, and newcomers will only need a brief glimpse of the game's mix of neon and ice to decide if it's their own brand of extreme sports. Personal preferences aside SSX confirms that the snowboarding genre cannot and should not be forgotten, and will almost certainly rank among 2012's best offerings.
In my opinion there is no good reason why it has taken so long for SSX to make an appearance on the current generation of consoles. The last true SSX game, SSX: On Tour, came out just a month before the current generation of consoles launched in 2005 (I don’t count SSX Blur on the Wii, sorry). 6 ½ years later I’ve finally gotten my hands on one of my favorite games and am in the middle of playing the absolute heck out of it as SSX has finally made its return.
A reinvention of the classic action snowboarding franchise, SSX packs adrenaline into every run with compelling characters and heart-pumping adventures as riders battle the most treacherous and diverse mountain ranges on Earth.
SSX strikes an immediate chord with series fans, while still providing a more than welcoming feel for people new to the franchise. With both new and familiar mechanics, SSX is a refreshing reboot that does the job of reinventing itself while not alienating its core identity. The absence of any conventional multiplayer matchmaking definitely will turn a few heads, but if you’ve been dying to play a game that tosses you high into the sky, and landing some of the most outrageous physical feats of the human person on a snowboard, then this game is certainly worth a look.
