Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

The long-awaited fifth iteration of Capcom’s definitive fighting game series should have been a first round knockout.

It took nearly two years to get the game we should have received at launch. But what we now have is an incredible experience.

Certainly not a must buy for all Street Fighter fans, Arcade Edition is a good jumping off spot for newcomers to the game. Having been out for a couple of years now, almost all issues have been ironed out, making Street Fighter V one of the best looking, best playing fighters on the PlayStation 4.

I’ve been playing Street Fighter since I was five years old, the SNES version of vanilla Street Fighter II being a huge gateway into all video games. Every new release brings me excitement…until Street Fighter V’s limited launch two years ago left a bad impression. Too many things I’d become used to were gone, leaving me and many others yearning for more. Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition answers those prayers, finally feeling like SFV is a complete product.

Street Fighter V moves up several weight divisions, as it puts its launch problems behind it and finally becomes worthy of its iconic name.

Street Fighter 5 Arcade Edition marks the completion of a transformation from bare-bones fighting game with a rock-solid core to a fully featured example of the genre at its best. The new V-Triggers are sure to shake up the competitive scene, while the nostalgic new modes breathe new life into the single-player fighting.

Prior to the game’s release in early 2016, Capcom tried to market Street Fighter V as a more accessible take on the increasingly-insular fighting series. Unfortunately, at launch, Street Fighter V was anything but. Sure, throwing Hadokens was still simple enough, but the game’s meager selection of modes catered almost exclusively to hardcore competitive players. Where was Arcade Mode? Where were the local multiplayer options? Casual fighting fans were out of luck, which was a shame, because there are a lot of people who love Street Fighter, despite not being great at it.

The spirit of competition is alive and well here, because Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition is a complete game, which feels a little strange for me to type, because in some ways it took us two years longer to get here than it should have. I am not taking that into consideration with scoring this release – that would be unfair, but I still feel the point has to be acknowledged. However, moving past that to accept Arcade Edition for what it is, we have a gorgeous game with fantastic fighting gameplay complimented by a solid roster with a variety of satisfying modes. Better late than never?

The Arcade Edition added features give it a lot of meat for sure, but the irony is most of it is ultimately filler to the core gameplay experience that was first available in 2016. This leaves Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition in a curious middle ground of being an excellent niche product, but only a “good” video game.

You better have to choose if it’s worth spending your spare cash, because it might not be the game for you and it might be for others.

But this is only half the story, as by giving Yun his classic Genei Jin Super Art from Street Fighter III - which creates shadows that mimic his attacks - Capcom has created a cap-doffing beast who can pull off a custom combo comeback even on the verge of defeat. Yang also receives a similar but less deadly super, while Oni and Evil Ryu make do with their classic Raging Demons. And just to be extra sly, Oni can pull his off while airborne.
