Super Mega Baseball 4 is a thrilling, fun, and intricate take on the sport. There’s no denying its quality and complexity, yet it both welcomes players who want some quick baseball matches and those who are in it for the long run. The question that remains for long-time fans is if it’s worth stepping into the field mostly for the new Legends, the visual upgrade, and a few more additions that make it a solid game. It’s great baseball for sure, but consider the above before joining the draft.

As the genre has progressed through the generations, sports video games have become increasingly complicated as they add more wrinkles to their team management tools and more depth to their on-the-field action. Super Mega Baseball 4 harkens back to the sports games of the mid-90s, bringing streamlined gameplay and astounding levels of customization while introducing novel concepts. But though the throwback approach is sound in many ways, it does come with some concessions.
Super Mega Baseball 4 delivers the biggest and best parts of baseball with the series' signature humorous style and immersive gameplay.
Overall Super Mega Baseball 4 is immensely disappointing and an unworthy successor to its predecessor. SMB 3 was a genuinely fun and clean playing arcade baseball game, and never needed to be more than that. Now, though, it seems like the series is being positioned as a viable alternative to the MLB license. The new game modes, efforts to bring real-world names into the fold, and aesthetic shifts all seem to be designed to pivot Super Mega Baseball to become something to take more seriously and commit more time to.
