Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter is a phenomenal game that new and old fans will love. It features gorgeous animation that's similar to childhood classics like Watership Down or The Secret of NIMH. Upon booting up Tails of Iron, you’re greeted with what seems to be a somewhat dark, but accessible fairytale about a young mouse who’s destined to be king, since his father, the current king, is getting old and wants to abdicate. I’ve reviewed a fair whack of games so far in 2021 and Tails of Iron is easily the best of the bunch. Addictively deadly difficult combat, a wonderful game world to explore and a compelling story all add up to having a very good time indeed. At the end of the game, Odd Bug Studios tease a sequel, to which I say ‘Yes please!’ as this is easily the best Rat ‘em up I’ve ever played.

Tails of Iron could go deeper on the story and lighter on the backtracking, but if it ever gets a sequel I hope it maintains obvious love seen in the art direction and design.

Tails of Iron isn’t the biggest adventure in the world – while it has numerous maps to explore, they’re not particularly expansive – but it does have a lot of heart. It’s easy to warm to Redgi despite him not having a voice, which is quite an achievement in itself, and as you travel around his kingdom, fighting off bugs, frogs and other pesky creatures, you’ll come to care about his fate. Simply put, in only 40 minutes, Tails of Iron became my most anticipated for the rest of the year. It’s got the potential to stand as tall as its inspirations, the potential to become an indie hallmark deserving of that same popularity that might cause fans to spiral into a frenzy simply because an unrelated third-party announces an indie press event. If you play anything next month, make it Tails of Iron.
