Over the years, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have tried their hands – or flippers, I guess? – at numerous video game genres. There’s been Turtle inspired side-scrolling beat ‘em ups, one-on-one fighters, platformers, a light gun shooter, and a roguelike. Heck, even the pinball genre has been taken on by the awesome foursome. Now, with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown, the brothers are giving turn-based strategy a go.

The combination of turn-based strategy and beat-'em-up gameplay felt like a bit of a square peg, round hole situation, but Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown melds the two to deliver one of the freshest takes on TMNT that I've seen in a long time. It's a short-but-sweet experience that might not gel with everyone, but after 35 years of beat 'em ups and brawlers, this showcases the Turtles like you've never seen them before. And come on, that's pretty radical, dude.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown is a fun little title that brings the chaotic action and fast-paced momentum of TMNT beat-em-ups into the strategy game space. Focusing on the iconic mutant brothers after they're separated during an attack by the Foot Clan, the turn-based strategy game shifts players into a different role for each mission. Utilizing a baseline combat system that encourages creativity through diverse movesets for each character, Tactical Takedown challenges players to experiment with their approach to combat and movement.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown pays homage to the early cartoon origins of the four brothers and crafts a mediocre game around them. The fast pace of the story and lack of thematic depth are disappointing, and a few long levels can make gameplay feel tedious at times. Fans of the series will find some enjoyment inside this world, but I recommend new fans steer away from this one.

Tactical Takedown reimagines classic TMNT beat-'em-ups as a fast-paced tactical strategy game.

When I first saw Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown, my eyebrow rose, not because I was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan, but because the premise of a turn-based Turtles game is pretty peculiar. Clearly, Strange Scaffold saw something I didn’t because the game manages to be both a great TMNT game and a great tactical game. I even think the story will be one TMNT fans will enjoy, going from the rote “who rules after Shredder” storyline and taking it somewhere sublime.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown is an exciting take on the turn-based genre, aiming for quick and hard-hitting combat rather than the familiar and more methodical approach.

The Turtles have a long history in video games, and the spectrum of quality for those projects is all over the place. Strange Scaffold has opted for a novel departure from expectation with Tactical Takedown, taking the four radical green brothers into a grid-based tactical affair that still aims for a sense of high movement and excitement. Production values are limited, and the game’s scope is small, but fans can find a lot to enjoy in this turn-based adventure.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown is a bit lacking in terms of difficulty and enemy variety, and the story doesn't feel too creative. That said, the abilities of each Ninja Turtle reflect their personalities well and allows for some visceral tactical takedowns. Generally, it's a game turn-based tactics fans should enjoy for a few hours.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown is a fun, if barebones, tactics game reminiscent of the arcade classics that define this series.

Ever since the ’80s, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise has been one of the hottest properties to adapt into games. Across several decades, dozens (close to 50!) of games starring the lovable crime-fighting reptiles have graced our screens. Though there have been a lot of misses in that time, there have been countless adventure games, beat ’em ups and platformers that have charmed fans endlessly. At this point, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are a cross-media staple and are a ...

I never could have seen this coming, but it makes sense that such a talented indie studio would make an awesome Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game. Fun and challenging battles combine perfectly with a unique tabletop-like art style and an excellent soundtrack, making this game feel like a new side street off memory lane.

The turtle boys don't cut 'em no slack in a short but sweet tactics game that feels like the foundation for something much bigger.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown combines the fundamentals of a Turn-Based Strategy with the mechanics of an arcade Beat ‘Em Up for a truly unique strategic experience.

May 22, 2025 Read Review

TMNT: Tactical Takedown is more experimentally thrilling than you might expect from a licensed game, its solo strategy fights packing so much momentum it almost feels like a brawler. A lack of variety in objectives and environments, along with some balancing issues, leave me wanting more from this short but cheesy (complimentary) experience – but this is still a radically easy recommendation.
