Tesla vs. Lovecraft is a wonderful and creative twin-stick shooter that manages to stand out from the crowd in what is something of an oversaturated genre. Despite the small reservation I have with the game’s initial difficulty level, everything else — its art style, sountrack, gameplay and overall atmosphere — adds up to make a truly worthwhile experience. It might just be one of 10tons’ best.

With a name like Tesla vs Lovecraft, you're expecting a certain tone. This is not a serious shooter; right from the outset it aims for ‘insane’ and works from there. Appropriate given the game's antagonist. The title screen blasts out a chaotic theme tune, depicting a monster-riding H.P. Lovecraft facing off against Nikola Tesla in a mech suit. Yet even that doesn’t prepare you for the strange and...

Tesla vs Lovecraft is stupid fun, reveling in nonsense and bullets. The rapid, frantic gameplay delivered in snackable portions underscored by a fantastic soundtrack makes for a hugely entertaining experience, even if it gets a tad repetitive after a while. We’d say blasting Lovecraftian horrors as Tesla piloting a mech was never this fun, but then it wasn’t ever done before.

In all, Tesla vs Lovecraft may be 10Tons most approachable and well-polished game yet. It’s got a load of levels across three distinct London settings, and tons of weapons and gadgets to wield. I’d have loved some more long-term leveling, things that didn’t wipe away after each mission. All told, it’s the most fun I’ve had with a twin-stick shooter from 10Tons, and it shows that they’re perfecting...

Tesla vs Lovecraft doesn’t reinvent the twin-stick shooter genre, but it’s a hell of a lot of fun and has its own weird and distinct style. I only wish there were a bit more substance to the cutscenes and a few more story missions packed in for good measure. But if you like fighting off large waves of monsters, you’ll get a lot of fun out of its endless mode.

Tesla vs. Lovecraft is imbued with a frenetic, bold energy that I only wish its designers had committed to more strongly. While there is fun in the premise of knocking back waves of Lovecraftian horrors while teleporting around them and maximizing Tesla’s devices, none of these concepts ever truly hits the mark. The result is a distracting but ultimately mindless exercise in repetition, which fail...
