The Almost Gone Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

I thoroughly enjoyed The Almost Gone's sombre, minimalist story. The puzzles you encounter are hard enough to create a sense achievement but still felt manageable, and referenced the story beautifully, though some elements could have been improved. Due to the often dark subject matter, this game may not be for everybody, however I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone that thinks they can handle it.

I have to say, that despite certain technological advantages prevalent in AAA games, indies continue to impress me the most. This is largely due to the fact that their studios aren’t pressured by large publishers to create something that will satisfy the broadest demographic as possible, and rake in the most money. Small developers are able to take their time and craft an experience all their own. The most recent example is The Almost Gone from Happy Volcano, a puzzler set apart by its fres...

The Almost Gone is an interesting little indie coming to us from Happy Volcano, a mobile game developer based in Belgium. Small in scale but big in its accomplishments, this game won Best Mobile Game in 2016 at the Belgian Game Awards, then two more awards in 2018. So it’s been around for a while, but only now has it released for general audiences. And now that it’s here, it’s clear to see what the judges saw in it. It’s half-puzzle, half-exploration in a similar way to What Remains o...

The Almost Gone is a relaxing point-and-click exploration game with puzzle solving elements. The story unfolds through investigating the environment, so be sure to pay attention if you want to get answers. It won't blow your mind with the story or gameplay, and it doesn't take long to complete, but it's still worth checking out.

In conclusion, The Almost Gone is a haunting experience that uses its gameplay and style to tell a strong tale about traumatic events. The game does have issues with regards to the balance of the puzzles and optimization for the Switch, but left me with a lot of complex feelings. If you are looking for a story driven puzzle game with a great story, you will not forget The Almost Gone anytime soon.

The Almost Gone is like a fleeting memory; it's the tragic tale of abuse and loss, captured in a series of blurry vignettes. Its puzzle mechanics, although fairly simple, are refined, even if they aren't explored to their fullest. The two-hour story sits at the forefront of the experience and never overstays its welcome. In fact, The Almost Gone would likely benefit from an extra hour, but what we got is plenty good on its own.

The Almost Gone grips with its foreboding narrative, rewarding puzzles, and diorama aesthetic, but falters somewhat in part due to obtuse moments and a weak narrative payoff

The Almost Gone has a lot of darkness stretching beneath the surface of these whimsical dioramas. Here’s our review.
