Unforeseen Incidents Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Let’s get in out of the way: Unforeseen Incidents is a bad name. After all, the phrase “unforeseen incidents” could be used to describe pretty much any media, since what puts a story into motion is quite literally called the “inciting incident.” And Unforeseen Incidents deserves better, because it’s a point-and-click game with an interesting story and incredible art that people should experience. Developed by Backwoods Entertainment with both English and German voicing, I was attracted to the game because of its unique artwork and the classic format of the point-and-click—I was not disappointe...

Unforeseen Incidents is a smart, well-written adventure game that keeps you hooked from start to finish.

Unforeseen Incidents leans heavily into the adventure genre, with the player exploring static locales and grabbing every item they can to try and combine them when the puzzle pieces start to fall together. Even the characters match the feel of traditional adventure games, with witty rapports and a light-hearted main character monologue breaking the silence. These monologue moments are a little jarring given the subject matter of a killer virus and conspiracy, and something more sombre akin to The Sundew may have been a better fit, with the humorous dialogue providing enough levity as it is.

Harper’s role as an accidental hero adds an interesting twist in itself. He generally comes across as a regular guy caught up in events way beyond what he’s used to dealing with, despite one or two occasions where his emotional reactions to the situation didn’t feel strong enough. In contrast to the serious storyline, Harper’s commentary is often humorous, which occasionally feels like it’s trying too hard to be funny, but there are also some pretty entertaining lines and references. There is a number of entertaining supporting characters, whom I enjoyed interacting with as I saw their story t...
