The year is 2035. For some reason, humanity has created a WALL-E-esque line of robots that mimic their needs as closely as possible. This means the robots can also think, and eventually they get sick of being inferior to humans. They build a spaceship and leave Earth behind, roaming the galaxy in search of a new home. The result is The Colonists, a settlement building game that’s been inspired by titles like The Settlers and Anno. The title has been on Steam for over two years, but has just made the leap to consoles.

The Colonists is a strategic settlement game with multiple campaigns, an assortment of maps, and a sandbox mode to build whatever you want at a comfortable pace. It provides a challenge to those looking for it and a relaxing experience for those who are not, rewarding the ones who complete the mission quickly but also giving something for those who take their time. The Colonists is a great game overall. It simplifies the 4X strategy genre down into a charming and chilled experience with adorable little robots that make watching your civilization thrive all the more enchanting. Its problems on the Switch come from a lack of mouse and keyboard inputs and some rather vague (or buggy) mechanics that could do with further explaining for novices and newcomers alike. There’s an anecdote about Age of Empires 2 where the developers had intended a fifth resource called ore, which would have simulated metal for swords and armour, leaving gold to be solely for economic purposes.
