The Last Case of Benedict Fox Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
The Last Case of Benedict Fox's beautiful visuals will keep you hooked from the get-go. The mechanics are simple enough that even novice players won't have trouble getting the hang of the game.
The premise is exciting! You’re Benedict Fox, and demonic friend, taking on a case about a murder, a secret society, and more. This game is not for the faint of heart when it comes to puzzles and problem solving. You can get frustrated easily if you don’t breathe, but it's a challenging kind of frustration and fun. If you love puzzle games and platformers, this will be a must play. And if you love lore, it has that in droves. While it has moments of feeling directionless, don’t worry. Just walk around and you’re bound to find something you haven’t seen before.
The Last Case of Benedict Fox was clearly crafted with love as it nails what it is to be a fantastic Metroidvania, wrapping it up in a Lovecraftian murder mystery. Every part of this game feeds wonderfully into the others, creating a great experience that is only really let down by some mechanical inconsistencies.
Despite these gripes though, I came away pleased with the time I’d spent in Limbo. There’s a lot of heart to the game, and a true passion oozing out of every tentacle from the team that put it together. If you can handle some curious design quirks, a few bugs, and don’t mind poking around in the dark looking for clues, The Last Case of Benedict Fox might just be a breath of fresh air.
The Last Case of Benedict Fox is an alright metroidvania mystery game, but can be incredibly frustrating at times and gets very repetitive. The game started off with an interesting story, but felt like it didn’t pay off in the end.
Plot Twist's Lovecraftian Metroidvania has finally arrived on PlayStation with the definitive edition adding new features and updated visuals for current hardware. It contains a beautiful world trapped inside a mediocre story. Check out our full review for The Last Case of Benedict Fox Definitive Edition on PS5.

The Last Case of Benedict Fox is a curious mix of genres. Narratively, it is a supernatural mystery with elements of Lovecraftian lore scattered throughout. Gameplay-wise, it’s a Metroidvania with a twist: its focus is on puzzles and secrets instead of enemies and bosses. It’s a striking premise, but unfortunately, the sum of its parts doesn’t measure up to a very memorable experience.
An irritating and needlessly obtuse Lovecraftian metroidvania
An interesting action-platforming title that is worth playing through if you are a fan of cosmic horror and Metroidvania games.
