Who would have imagined that immediately after finishing (the now formerly previous version of) The Sinking City, that the remaster would suddenly release the next day? It’s hard to believe, but it couldn’t have been better times. After playing through all of the awkward jankiness of the original, I couldn’t wait to see how the remaster may have updated the combat and visuals. And all thanks to an initial Old God/Cosmic Horror fixation flame sparked by playing Dredge a while back.

If you were hoping that The Thing Remastered would fix many of the issues of the original 2002 game, you will be semi-satisfied. The Thing Remastered preserves the twenty-year old PS2 game without tarnishing it, and improving some presentation aspects, as well as tidying up the formerly broken Infection System. However, if you expected refinements to game's shooting mechanics or many of its old foibles then you'll be disappointed.

I’ve always had a soft spot for earnest ‘B’ games. Games that clearly had aims of being a top-tier product that just couldn’t quite get there. Typically they fall short for reasons of time and budget, but often also for being burdened with an overly ambitious vision to begin with. By all rights Computer Artworks’ 2002 The Thing is a game that should’ve been dead, buried, and forgotten forever. It was never praised especially highly in its day, and licensed game adaptations of its ...

One of the earliest articles this author ever wrote for Push Square was about Computer Artworks’ terrifying 2002 horror shooter, The Thing. A decade later, Nightdive Studios has worked its magic on a remaster, breathing new life into this rough-around-the-edges gem.

The Thing: Remastered is a solid remaster of a decent game that isn't lacking in interesting ideas but doesn't seem to know what to meaningfully do with them.

The Thing: Remastered is worthwhile and no mistake. Nightdive's lovingly made revamp might not paper over the cracks of the 2002 original, but it preserves what made it a cult classic, while applying subtle, albeit meaningful, improvements.

The Thing Remastered is everything one could ask for in a remaster. With graphical improvements that don't sacrifice the original's gritty tone and convenience features smoothing out rough gameplay, this is a must-play for survival horror fans.

The Thing: Remastered, as expected from Nightdive, nails all of the technical aspects of a superb remaster. It gets full points from us on this front. However, the game itself is very much a tale of what could have been, had the devs stuck to the eerie exploration and atmospheric fear/trust system of the first couple of hours. Get past these opening hours, though, and overwhelmingly poor action sequences become more and more commonplace, resulting in a game that's just not much fun to play once it settles into its depressingly bland action rhythm.

The Thing Remastered is a great remaster of the 2002 classic, but some of the original's issues still remain. However, it is very playable on the Steam Deck.

Part of me wishes their effort was spent on a better game, but the other part is happy that I got to experience the absolute mess that is The Thing. I know it sounds weird to hear, “This is a mess; you should totally check it out,” but that’s what I’m saying. The Thing is a fascinating cluster of missteps, and a completely unconvincing facsimile of its source material. But it’s hard to look away when it turns itself inside out.
Read Full ReviewThe Thing, by its very concepts and mechanics, is well worth the price of admission for historians and enthusiasts. There really isn’t much quite like it, and perhaps that’s because it would be difficult to pull off well. For what it’s worth, The Thing was never perfect. It has some weird speed in its overall gameplay and cringy dialogue that detract from its scarier elements, but those elements are still fun, and with the improvements that address a sore spot in its strength, The Thing: Remastered makes an interesting outlier of the horror genre that much more valuable.

Ported by Nightdive, The Thing looks fantastic and has all the bells and whistles you'd want from a remaster. As a follow-up to the cult 1982 movie, the story didn't quite do it for me, and the gameplay, mostly with its AI companions, can be a bit annoying.

Nightdive have done a great job preserving and uplifting The Thing into a crisp and playable modern offering. It’s still a fascinating game, but maybe not quite interesting enough to be worth revisiting.
