Trailblazers has been described by Supergonk, the game’s developers, as “F-Zero meets Splatoon”. As you can see, this game certainly has cars in it, just like F-Zero, and there’s definitely paint on the floor, just like Splatoon. The general idea is that in teams of two or three, you paint the track while racing, giving your teammates a trail that boosts their car. The paint does not fade away, but it can be painted over by your rivals. You can attack rival drivers by sending all your paint forward in one straight line, forcing your opponent to drop their combo and lose all of their momentum.

If you love arcade racing games then here's a brand new indie with a fresh spin on the genre. However, does Trailblazers blaze enough trails to provide a worthwhile racing experience? Poke a hole in a can of paint and get ready to race.

Trailblazers is a race-and-paint game for children. With its smooth, consistent gameplay and simplistic challenges, a group of toddlers could be content for hours. Just don't be surprised when the 12 year old is reaching for Grand Theft Auto instead.

A variable frame rate is an out and out killer for any racing game, and despite Trailblazers’ clear potential it’s impossible to see past that. The overall concept, of merging F-Zero and Splatoon, is a fantastic idea, but perhaps it needed a bit longer in development in order for it to be fully realised.
