Trollhunters: Defenders of Arcadia Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Trollhunters has taken the world by storm on Netflix and millions are jumping into the adventure headfirst from the comfort of their couches. Now, Wayforward and Outright Games have released a brand new game, Trollhunters: Defenders of Arcadia, that’s set to mirror the Netflix series, breathing creativity into another form of consumable media. The question remains, were they able to replicate the success of the Netflix series here?
I have to commend Outright Games for keeping the flame of cartoon-based licensed games alive almost entirely by themselves. The publisher behind some surprising hits such as Crayola Scoot and Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion, is planning to release a ton of licensed games over the second half of 2020. Games based on shows and films range from impressively representative to disappointing cash-grabs so let's see where Trollhunters lies.
As far as platform games go, there are much better titles out there than Trollhunters: Defenders of Arcadia. It’s let down by uninspired visuals, and a combat system that just isn’t fun. If you’re a fan of the Dreamworks series, then you might get a bit more joy out of it, but for everyone else it’s a rather humdrum platformer. It works, but that’s about it.
Trollhunters: Defenders of Arcadia’s gameplay is okay, its visuals are fine and its story is either a mess or passively engaging depending on your level of interest in its source material, which all makes for a game that should be skipped unless you’re insanely desperate for another form of media from the Trollhunter universe.
Unless you're a young child or a massive Trollhunters fan, avoid this boring, unoriginal game at all costs
