Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher

Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher is a humorous mashup between Ultraman and Monster Rancher, allowing you to raise and train your very own Kaiju. It’s quirky and great for passing the time. The battle system could use a little tweaking to resolve issues with Kaiju not being able to land any attacks at all and then losing because the opponent knocked 50 Life down. My Kaiju, Boris, will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher is a pleasant surprise that was extremely unexpected. From the recent revival of the Monster Rancher titles to Ultraman finally making an impact overseas, it's a delight. It's worth noting that this title is aiming to appeal to fans of the Ultraman franchise first and foremost, but there's tons for those who have never experienced it before to love. Even the ugliest or creepiest kaiju can become endearing and lovable after spending time training them long and hard to be their absolute best. But even without a fun and innovative way to summon new kaiju, I think Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher is an excellent revival of a cult classic series. You don’t even have to be a fan of Ultraman to appreciate this crossover. As long as you don’t mind the slow and occasionally repetitious gameplay that’s at the core of the Monster Rancher franchise, there are plenty of good times to be had here.

Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher is the quintessential Monster Rancher experience, just bigger, louder, and more polished looking. The mechanics of the combat and training cycle will be familiar to long-time fans while the new larger scale of the creatures lends itself to the scale of Ultraman and his monstrous foes. Scanning every electronic device in your house to see what monster pops out is satisfying even if the actual gameplay gets stale over time.

Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher is a brand-new collaboration between Ultraman, a famous Japanese Tokusatsu work, and Monster Rancher, a popular role-playing simulation series. This new game introduces iconic Ultra Kaiju such as Alien Baltan, Zetton, and Gomora to the popular gameplay mechanics of raising and battling monsters from the Monster Rancher game.

I have to thank globalization and the increased popularity of Japanese pop culture in the West for letting me play this game, in full, where I currently live. Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher’s title should be “Monster Rancher featuring Ultraman”. That’s exactly what it is. If you’ve played Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX, this is basically that game with an Ultraman theme. For Monster Rancher fans, this is more of what you love, with little innovation. Ultraman fans are definitely going to get a kick out of the 200+ kaiju offered by the game. But there aren’t non-Ultraman kaiju like Godzilla, Gamera, Power Rangers villains, etc. And, unfortunately, like the original Monster Rancher games, there’s not much depth to the gameplay.
