Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st] Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

I tend to be pretty good at fighting games, but it’s rare that any of the ones I play truly click with me. Back in 2015, Under Night on PS3 totally clicked with me. The balance between simple character movesets and how system mechanics elevate those moves into an endless suite of juicy combos is something I found myself attracted to like a magnet to an iron bar. Beyond that, though, Under Night sports a dynamic cast of characters and some of the prettiest 2D visuals I’ve seen in a fighting game. Exe:Late[st] takes the delicious Under Night cake and adds an entire extra layer of your favorite f...

UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH Exe:Late[st] is a flashy fighter that is a welcome addition to the fighting game community. It’s not the deepest game around, but its unique mechanics and anime stylings will appeal to both novice fighters and seasoned vets.

The total package offered by Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[st] is one worth checking out. With combos and accessibility akin to Dragon Ball FighterZ and deep, intricate mechanics like Tekken and Injustice, it truly caters to whoever chooses to pick up a controller. A diverse and unique cast, an electric soundtrack and exciting visuals make for ferocious fights, and while the competition is hot in the fighting game genre right now it’s undoubtedly worth a peek. The original was a great game itself, so there’s no reason to think that this complete edition isn’t even better. Give it a chance, an...

Yes, the story is very much lacking, but as I mentioned in the beginning, most don’t seek out fighting games for their story-telling abilities. If you’re going in with pure focus on the gameplay, what you’ll find here is an excellent fighter that can be very welcoming to newcomers to the genre. Veteran or not, I highly recommend giving this title a shot.

Even so, Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st] (here’s hoping this is the last time I need to type that) is fantastic. The Vorpal system is a clever twist on the format, adding a neat extra layer of strategy to the game, but it’s the cast that really makes Under Night In-Birth stand out. There’s so much love and creativity gone into the roster, and that, more than anything else, will make or break a fighting game.

One thing that I absolutely adore Arc System Works for is their unrelenting quest to do two things: the first, make 2D fighting games both nostalgic and fresh. The second, make fighting games funky as hell. Anyone that’s played Guilty Gear or BlazBlue already know exactly what I mean by both of those statements, as should anyone that’s played Dragon Ball FighterZ. It seems fast, but we’ve got yet another Arc System Works fighter coming out very soon, and this one is every bit as quality as anything Arc System Works have ever produced.

Not many genres stand the test of time as well as 2D fighting games. French Bread's Under Night In-Birth has already seen a console port in the form of Exe:Late so can this Latest iteration put up a fight?

The PS4 is well served with 2D fighting games, but that didn’t stop this latest incarnation of the weird and somewhat wonderful Under Night In-Birth universe getting spruced up a little and expanded a lot to make the jump to current-gen hardware.
