Velocity 2X

Simply put, Velocity 2X feels just as good as it always has. Fans of the game from previous consoles who own a Switch will have just as good of a time if they did on there, and if you own one, you should absolutely consider picking this up, especially if you never played the three DLC packs. While there might be a slight Joy-Con bug while playing the game, there's nothing here that ruins the experience, and, frankly, since you don't have to finagle with the cross-save system in order to play the game on the go, Velocity 2X is better than ever.

Velocity 2X deftly balances action, platforming, and puzzle-solving, and it does so on a knife’s edge, at high speeds. Not only is it an outstanding Vita and PS4 game, but it’s the first game in a long time to give me the thrilling sense of mastery that a well-played level of Sonic the Hedgehog used to back in the 90s.

I enjoy when games defy easy classification, and if Velocity 2X does anything, it’s that it refuses to settle quietly into a familiar niche. Elements of space shooters and platformers are certainly present, but the focus on speed adds a racing component, some sections have light puzzle features, and an innovative teleportation mechanic adds something fresh and surprising.

Despite the game's dipped-nose poise, its obsession with speed and clocks, it rewards those who take their time, who perfect their technique on each stage, and who savour an arcade game that's been lovingly embellished and expanded to its full and likely final potential.

It’d be nice to see an entry focused entirely on Sony’s latest console, but for now this is yet another supremely playable shmup title with oodles of replay value and a twist of originality.

Velocity 2X has quite a bit to offer in terms of fun, challenging gameplay, but an at times clumsy control scheme, forgettable side-content, and anti-climactic finale spell the difference between truly great and pretty good.
