Victor Vran: Overkill Edition Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

The release date for Victor Vran seems perfectly timed with the announcement of Diablo coming to Switch. Blizzard fans have a terrific opportunity to get accustomed to the style of play on the Switch and will have a fun title to play heading into the fall. For the rest of us, Victor Vran is a terrific option to dip your toes into the genre. The wide range of combat options and the openness that is maintained throughout makes it accessible to a wider range of audience. If you enjoy overpowering dozens of enemies with wanton acts of destruction, you’ll have a hell of a good time with Victor Vr…

Overall, I think Victor Vran: Overkill Edition is definitely a game worth a play.  While the comparisons to Diablo III will obviously be made, Victor Vran adds different mechanics to shake up the tried-and-true ARPG format and does a great job doing so.  Adding the ability to play the game on the go means you can keep your loot grind going whenever you have a chance.  And come on, who doesn’t want to power slide through a bunch of demons?

One of the most polished dungeon crawlers in years, Victor Vran is an easy recommendation to anyone with even the slightest fondness for the genre.

There have been tons of overhead action RPGs over the decades yet few have come close to the incredible world of Diablo. Now that Victor Vran is available for console with two substantial pieces of DLC, let's see how it holds up in the genre.

The notion of taking a hit on the PC and porting it over to the consoles is not a new idea, nor will it ever be one to go out of style. When the opportunity for Victor Vran: Overkill Edition – a top-down action RPG from Haiemimont Games – came up, I was excited to check it out. What Victor Vran ended up delivering was an awesome, fun, humorous, and ultimately addictive game that scratched that itch and not just filled in the void I didn’t know Diablo had left but carved out a big piece in my gaming library for itself.

Victor Vran brings a fresh perspective to the genre by adding a broad range of equipment and special moves that drastically change combat, along with a simple, but game-changing, jumping mechanic that separates itself from other action-RPGs.

Within the first few minutes of playing Victor Vran Overkill Edition, I immediately had flashbacks to Diablo III for many reasons. The similarities are shown in

Similarly to the Diablo series, Victor Vran: Overkill Edition is all about loot. Whether you're breaking open pots, opening chests, or buying from merchants, Haemimont Games' latest sees you stuffing your pockets with all the weapons, consumables, and items that you can find, from scythes and swords to destiny cards and demon powers. At times it's a little too much to keep track of, as your eyes will ache from comparing weapon statistics and checking effects. Other times, however, there's a real satisfaction in finding a rare weapon. Whether you'll enjoy this game or not really depends on how ...

The high-energy fun of Victor Vran means it really is a romp, if one that occasionally stutters. While the slightly repetitive nature grates, you can easily see a few hours dissolving into Victor Vran before your very eyes. Like a vampire in sunlight.

A fun but ultimately shallow experience, Victor Vran offers a dungeon crawler experience that is solid, but not particularly interesting.

It’s that sense of humour that helps Victor Vran to step out of the shadow of its genre namesake. It’s a fully feature-rich example of the Diablo clone, is well balanced so that it never becomes tiresome to play, and offers plenty of shiny loot. The gameplay itself might not be breaking down any boundaries, but between this and Titan Quest, the Nintendo Switch is not lacking for quality horde slaughtering action.

Victor Vran may be voiced by the famous Geralt of Rivia, but the world of Zagoravia doesn’t have quite the same gritty appeal as the Witcher 3. Luckily, you’ll be slaying far too demons, monsters, and other nasties to really care about the socio-political tensions you’re missing out on.
