World of Tanks Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

In World of Tanks 30-player teams are fighting action-packed PvP battles. The game features more than 150 armored fighting vehicles from the pre-WW2 era up to the Korean War: light, medium, heavy and super heavy tanks, tank destroyers, self-propelled howitzers and rocket artillery. The game includes American, German and Soviet tanks.

Wargaming's World of Tanks is inarguably one of the biggest multiplayer games in existence, and last week it got even bigger when Wargaming launched it on Xbox 360. While World of Tanks is huge among European PC gamers, the largely console-oriented British and American audiences have yet to fully embrace it. Moving the PC-centric World of Tanks to console could be seen as a risk.

World of Tanks might have a silly name, but it does something impressive. It manages to straddle pure tank simulation and shooter action to produce something that, despite being flawed, remains genuinely fun. The time required to research new tanks can be excessive, and the elements of chance (including matchmaking) can make games unnecessarily frustrating. A lack of in-game instructions can also make even basic mechanics like sight and cover enigmatic, but if you can look beyond the issues, there is a lot to like.

I guess the great question here is “if this was a premium game without microtransactions, would I spend $100 Australian or whatever for it?” I’d say no. This isn’t my kind of genre at the best of times, and I don’t think it’s the finest example of the genre, not as long as its core potential – to offer strategic combat – is ruined by obnoxious players. But I do think this is a well-crafted game and it’s a fair call to say it’s the finest attempt at a serious, “hardcore”, free-to-play experience out there is probably justified.

Anyone who truly appreciates World of Tanks won’t need a review to guide them. They’re already well beyond the long barrier to entry. Everyone else will likely find themselves similarly on the outside looking in. There might be something special to World of Tanks, but it’s not something that’s immediately apparent; it’s something that only shows itself after a significant investment. The gameplay can be rewarding at times, but most won’t have the patience (or the money) to ever get to that point. Thus, World of Tanks won’t ever be more than a quick detour on the way to something that’s easier ...

For those with the time and patience however, World of Tanks looks to be an ever-evolving title with ambitions to stay fresh for the foreseeable future (new nations have been added since launch, and Risk-style clan-based world warfare is reportedly coming soon). That additional spit and polish is happening on top of an engine and structure that - despite the reservations listed above - is already in an extremely decent state, and given there are currently no waiting times whatsoever to be mat...
