World of Warcraft: The War Within Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
If this is how The Worldsoul Saga is kicking off, then this new WoW era will be its best yet. And if you’re thinking about returning to Azeroth, there is seriously no better time because The War Within is just that good.
I thought Dragonflight was the absolute peak of modern-day World of Warcraft, but I didn't think it could be topped. At first, I didn't have much hope for The War Within when diving into it. However, the action started immediately, and my interest was immediately piqued. While World of Warcraft has had some questionable choices in villains (looking at The Jailer from Shadowlands), Xal'atath feels multi-faceted and genuinely evil compared to other villains that have popped up over the years.
World of Warcraft: The War Within is a breath of fresh air. The expansion feels like it has put World of Warcraft back on track after a few years of sub-par storytelling, and the gameplay additions like Delves and Hero Talents also add quite a bit to look forward to for new players.
Kicking off a massive story with a short, well-paced introduction to the world within.
The War Within marks a pivot in Blizzard’s design philosophy that started in Dragonlight — making the game more accessible and solo-friendly, a game that has more respect for the player’s time. For someone who’s a lot busier than they were 17 years ago, this is an exciting proposition. That said, even the typical WoW fare is excellent this time around, with fantastic zones, quests, dungeons, end-game activates and a solid raid. If this new era of WoW continues on its current trajectory, I can see myself staying along for the ride for another 17 years.
The War Within is exactly what World of Warcraft needed.
It’s been a little bit over a month since early access for World of Warcraft's latest expansion, The War Within, launched. In that time, I’ve leveled characters, geared up, done a ton of dungeons, raided, and a plethora of delves. Now that the first season has started - although M+ and Mythic raiding don’t begin until September 17th - it’s finally time to take stock of where we are and put a score to this expansion. If you missed the first half of this review, take a quick detour to m...
The Harbinger of the Void and the Nerubian Empire have brought the city of Dalaran to ruin, sending the forces of Azeroth reeling. Descend into the never-before-seen subterranean worlds of Khaz Algar, filled with hidden wonders and lurking perils. Deliver justice upon the servants of the Shadow, and investigate the dark motives behind the Harbinger’s machinations in this thrilling first adventure of the Worldsoul Saga
The War Within continues World of Warcraft's comeback trajectory with a war worth fighting for Horde and Alliance alike. While this expansion isn't groundbreaking, it does do a great job of setting the stage for the Worldsoul Saga.
World of Warcraft: The War Within, the 10th expansion in the famed MMORPG franchise, and the 20th anniversary of the game itself, is a weird mish-mash of ideas coming off the very solo-centric expansions Shadowlands and Dragonflight. As some people might remember, I turned my back on "Retail WoW" after…
It’s that time again, World of Warcraft is expanding its world even more as we enter The War Within. The DLC, The War Within, will flow a bit differently than previous expansions the massive multiplayer online game has had, in that this is set to be a trilogy of expansions exploring a storyline set in motion in the game’s first expansion, The Burning Crusade. It’s time to feel the repercussions of everything that has happened involving the Titans, but first is the new big bad, Xal’ata...
