With every death, I become stronger. One day I will be more powerful than Spelunky could even imagine.. or not.

If you are the kind of masochist who enjoys the hardest and most punishing of games I would recommend Spelunky to you in an instant. The feeling of achievement when you conquer a cave system is unmatched by games which constantly hold your hand and throw health at you every step of the way.

Spelunky is a game that takes experts 10 minutes to complete, but it will take you hours before you’re remotely ready for that challenge. This is a superb 2D platformer that’s as easy to hate as it is to love, and your patience for punishment will be the determining factor. Players who live to overcome abusive challenges and obsess over discovering new things will hunger for Spelunky's deeply rewarding exploration.

Spelunky is a cave exploration / treasure-hunting game inspired by classic platform games and roguelikes, where the goal is to grab as much treasure from the cave as possible. Every time you play, the layout will be different. Use your wits, reflexes and items to survive and go ever deeper! Perhaps at the end, you may find what you're looking for...

While Spelunky is a fine addition to the growing library of masochistic titles it doesn't always quite manage to elicit the right response from its players.

Derek Yu's roguelike platformer reveals two essential truths: Death is constant, and Vita makes a fantastic format for this kind of game.

But that’s just me. I like retro RPGs still, and plenty of other gamers our there are going to love this game. Just go in prepared for something that could become very frustrating.

When it comes down to it, Spelunky feels dated. Since its initial release, roguelikes and lites have evolved a great deal. That evolution, of course, is due in part to Spelunky. A daily challenge seed with a leaderboard is something I first heard about in Spelunky. When comparing it to the modern members of the genre, what you get is lacking. This is still a perfectly playable game, which is a strong compliment for a remake of a freeware 2009 release. The concept of Spelunky is timeless, even if the game itself is not. I just think that recently developed roguelikes will give players more.
