Pining for survival-horror success

Oct 18, 2026

Silver Pines proves that the survival horror and Metroidvania genres were made for each other. It's not terribly scary, and the enemy encounters could be better, but its mysterious Twin Peaks-inspired narrative, excellent atmosphere, and great map design make it a must-play experience.

Silver Pines can be a bit obtuse at points with its clues and certainly allows you to wander a bit too much too quickly, but it makes up for it with rewarding exploration, an intriguing world, and a great sense of cleverness in its progression.

Silver Pines draws plenty of inspiration from its contemporaries, but unlike other love letters to gaming and television classics, it finds the means to make things its own. While it fails to sell me on the combination of the horror and Metroidvania genres, Silver Pines’ fascinating premise, thought-provoking ending, and remarkable art direction kept me seated from beginning to end.

Despite its clunky combat and some tedious boss fights, Silver Pines succeeds where it matters most. Its intriguing characters, eerie setting, and superb atmosphere make the investigation genuinely compelling, while the striking rotoscoped art style, phenomenal soundscape, and solid voice acting give the game a personality of its own. The puzzles are well-balanced, and limited resources help keep the experience tense without making it feel like a chore. Ultimately, Silver Pines is an engrossing experience that largely makes up for its mechanical shortcomings, minor as they may be.
