Verdict: Rogue Lites and Rogue Likes can be hit or miss. There’s a thin line to walk. You’re either going to have a game that’s too hard, and people give up on, or one that’s too easy and doesn’t have enough original stuff to keep people coming back. Hades absolutely hits its mark. Not only is this a great game. It’s currently my game of the year. Now excuse me while I go do another run.
It’s hard to pin down what exactly makes this game far short of blowing me away, other than it doesn’t offer a whole lot that hasn’t been seen before. 2K Sports does everything it needed to do with PGA Tour 2K21 but it doesn’t really go above and beyond.
Verdict: As is the case with most wannabe Overwatch games, Bleeding Edge isn’t terrible. It simply doesn’t offer anything that would pull anyone away from the original. The lack of heroes to choose from – and the extreme overpowerfication of some of those heroes – as well as a lack of maps or areas, and there isn’t a ton of replayability. This game feels like someone had a really good idea for a title and then didn’t quite know what to do with it. That appears to be the running theme of the entire game. It’s just a bit undercooked. When it comes to Game Pass, it might be worth downloading. It’s hard to claim it’s worth paying full price for.
Verdict: Gears 5 hooks you by making you actually care about the characters it shows you. It keeps you by showing you the stuff you loved about your favorite previous Gears of War game. That combo is enough to maybe attain the title of best Xbox One console exclusive title ever. It’s certainly the best one to hit in the last few years. Add in the fact that you can get it for no extra charge through Game Pass and it’s worth both the time and cost.
The game doesn’t quite live up to other similar games in the genre, but it’s worth the time and energy to check out if you’re a fan of these type of games.
Dark Souls 2on the PS4 is as close to perfect as any game I’ve played this year. The game is beautiful and the mechanics are easy. The only thing that ever got to me was when I’d end up wandering around, trying to find the way to move forward. But I’m pretty sure that was intentional on From Software's part.
