Professional reviews from gaming critics

The miniaturized version of Rocket League maintains the chaos, fun, and intensity of car-based sports, while perfecting a bite-sized approach.

One of modern gaming's true multiplayer success stories, Rocket League is an essential addition to the Switch's striking year-one library. Analyse every screenshot and video and yes, you'll spot visual downgrades when compared to the other console editions, but what's key here is that the spirit of the game has been transferred perfectly, with the added benefit of portable play which opens up the chance to host local matches with your Switch owning mates wherever and whenever you fancy. Developer Panic Button has done an utterly fantastic job with this port, but technical wizardry aside, what ...

Regardless of how you feel about “sports” games, you should really give Rocket League a punt. Easy to play and outrageous fun, this is a game that will surely enter the stable of games that you never quite get bored of no matter how much you play them. With the new Ranked Season starting at the end of the month, there’s nothing stopping you too becoming obsessed with whispering “goal, goal, goal” whenever the ball flies anywhere that isn’t your own net.

Relatively very minor gripes aside, Rocket League is a genuinely new type of game that provides addictive, enjoyable, skill-based fun that doesn't prevent new players from joining the fray and which never threatens to become dull. Even folks who aren't necessarily excited by football, sports in general, or cars will find something to love here and for many, it'll become their new favourite pastime. This is absolutely superb and will keep you entertained for many, many hours.

Rocket League is the most moreish multiplayer game since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Psyonix's vehicular soccer simulation adeptly illustrates the idea that simple concepts can succeed when expertly executed. And while it may have taken an entire generation for the seeds sewn by underrated PlayStation 3 exclusive Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars to truly take hold, we suspect that this leftfield local and online team-based hit will be boosting into some Game of the Year lists once the final whistle blows on 2015.

Rocket League is mechanically simple, but utterly brilliant because of it.

Rocket League is one of the best multiplayer experiences of this generation. The single player pales in comparison, but with the joy-riddled social chaos Rocket League has on offer, any solo campaign would.

Rocket League made a lot of waves when it was first released on the PS4. Considering this Xbox One version has some add-ons packed in, it is, at the very least just as good if not just a touch better.

An enjoyable, compulsively playable mix of driving and football.

Within a few hours of playing Rocket League, I had amassed plenty of “holy shit, did you see that?!” moments, both accidental and intentional. It’s easy to see why the game’s popularity has spread like wildfire despite little to no pre-release buzz. It’s easy to pick up, nearly impossible to put down, and tuned to perfection. All the fat, all the bullshit that may have overcomplicated the game’s design has been sliced off, and what’s left is a pure, thrilling competitive experience.
