There are a lot of people that think the sport of soccer (or football for our international friends) is just not entertaining. While I disagree with this statement, it could be asked exactly what would make soccer MORE exciting? If your answer was “cars”, then you’re totally right. Enter Rocket League, the successor to “Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars” released in 2008. Taking a soccer pitch, removing the lines and adding a glass dome over the top, as well as doing away with silly rules such as offside and penalties, gives us a chaotic, over-the-top and insanely fun experience. With multiple team options and a variety of customisations available for your vehicle, Rocket League is a near-endless supply of crazy action and awesome fun.<img decoding="async" data-attachment-id="20042" data-permalink="https://press-start.com.au/reviews/2015/07/29/rocket-league/attachment/rl_presentation/" data-orig-file="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/RL_PRESENTATION.jpg" data-orig-size="2000,160" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="RL_PRESENTATION" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/RL_PRESENTATION-300x24.jpg" data-large-file="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/RL_PRESENTATION-600x48.jpg" class="size-full wp-image-20042 alignnone" src="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/RL_PRESENTATION.jpg" alt="RL_PRESENTATION" width="2000" height="160" srcset="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/RL_PRESENTATION.jpg 2000w, https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/RL_PRESENTATION-300x24.jpg 300w, https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/RL_PRESENTATION-600x48.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px" />For a game of this calibre, Rocket League is visually quite impressive. One of the most notable points is the effort that has gone into each playable ground in the game; with the massive stadia all giving off a different vibe. Stadiums such as Beckwith Park has a homely, suburban feel to it, where inversely something like Mannfield is grandiose and brilliant. Where the former is very calm and basic, the latter is bright and full of neon, adding to the scale of the matches played there. The general exhibition matches narrow opposing colours to blue and orange, but in ‘Season’ mode the number of teams and colours expands; and these team colours are represented on-field by both cars and halves of the ground. Even the lights on the oversized ball itself change colour when the ball crosses into a team’s half of the ground, and the lights grow more intense the closer it gets to goal.<img decoding="async" data-attachment-id="20044" data-permalink="https://press-start.com.au/reviews/2015/07/29/rocket-league/attachment/still_rl_0000_layer-4/" data-orig-file="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/STILL_RL_0000_Layer-4.jpg" data-orig-size="1500,400" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="STILL_RL_0000_Layer 4" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/STILL_RL_0000_Layer-4-300x80.jpg" data-large-file="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/STILL_RL_0000_Layer-4-600x160.jpg" class="size-full wp-image-20044 aligncenter" src="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/STILL_RL_0000_Layer-4.jpg" alt="STILL_RL_0000_Layer 4" width="1500" height="400" srcset="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/STILL_RL_0000_Layer-4.jpg 1500w, https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/STILL_RL_0000_Layer-4-300x80.jpg 300w, https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/STILL_RL_0000_Layer-4-600x160.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px" />The detail on the cars is quite impressive for a game with such a simple premise – each vehicle shell is rendered with great detail, and the paint jobs reflect shining lights and shadows with an aspect of realism. Customisation options allow the player to further enhance their cars through a series of paint jobs and styles, including matte, corroded metal and high gloss paints among others, as well as different decals and styles to overlay on the car. Also customisable are the wheels, rocket trails, hats and antennae for the car, allowing the player to really make their vehicle their own and stamp it in their mould.<img decoding="async" data-attachment-id="20045" data-permalink="https://press-start.com.au/reviews/2015/07/29/rocket-league/attachment/still_rl_0001_layer-3/" data-orig-file="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/STILL_RL_0001_Layer-3.jpg" data-orig-size="1500,400" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="STILL_RL_0001_Layer 3" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/STILL_RL_0001_Layer-3-300x80.jpg" data-large-file="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/STILL_RL_0001_Layer-3-600x160.jpg" class="size-full wp-image-20045 aligncenter" src="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/STILL_RL_0001_Layer-3.jpg" alt="STILL_RL_0001_Layer 3" width="1500" height="400" srcset="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/STILL_RL_0001_Layer-3.jpg 1500w, https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/STILL_RL_0001_Layer-3-300x80.jpg 300w, https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/STILL_RL_0001_Layer-3-600x160.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px" />Accompanying the game is an electro/dance soundtrack composed by Mike Ault, giving the game an EA Sports feel to it. While the tracks are not changeable and do not have visible track listings, the songs add to the atmosphere, amplifying the adrenaline and intensity of the game during the menus. In actual gameplay the music is replaced by the chants of the crowd as well as engines roaring and the crazy sounds of each car’s rocket trail. Each car body has its own engine sound, and this is further customised by the type of rocket trail the player selects for their car.<img decoding="async" data-attachment-id="20041" data-permalink="https://press-start.com.au/reviews/2015/07/29/rocket-league/attachment/rl_gameplay/" data-orig-file="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/RL_GAMEPLAY.jpg" data-orig-size="2000,160" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="RL_GAMEPLAY" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/RL_GAMEPLAY-300x24.jpg" data-large-file="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/RL_GAMEPLAY-600x48.jpg" class="size-full wp-image-20041 alignnone" src="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/RL_GAMEPLAY.jpg" alt="RL_GAMEPLAY" width="2000" height="160" srcset="https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/RL_GAMEPLAY.jpg 2000w, https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/RL_GAMEPLAY-300x24.jpg 300w, https://press-start.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/RL_GAMEPLAY-600x48.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px" />The gameplay in Rocket League is simple on the surface, but deeper the more you play and immerse yourself. Removing the majority of rules from soccer, the game it is based on, Rocket League pits teams of 1 to 4 players against one another in a giant glass dome. The basic idea is to hit the oversized ball into the opponent’s goal, while stopping them from doing the same.
An enjoyable, compulsively playable mix of driving and football.
The miniaturized version of Rocket League maintains the chaos, fun, and intensity of car-based sports, while perfecting a bite-sized approach.
Rocket League’s colorfully absurd cars-playing-sports concept works so well because the energy of its arcadey gameplay meshes with its deep team-based strategy and variety of modes. It’s exceedingly rare to find a multiplayer game that’s welcoming and approachable for new players and so intricate that the best players can earn a living by mastering its depths. Rocket League is a golden example of turning a good idea into something truly amazing.
One of modern gaming's true multiplayer success stories, Rocket League is an essential addition to the Switch's striking year-one library. Analyse every screenshot and video and yes, you'll spot visual downgrades when compared to the other console editions, but what's key here is that the spirit of the game has been transferred perfectly, with the added benefit of portable play which opens up the chance to host local matches with your Switch owning mates wherever and whenever you fancy. Developer Panic Button has done an utterly fantastic job with this port, but technical wizardry aside, what really matters is that the core game is so addictive, so compelling, so enjoyable and – perhaps above all else – so deep. Don't let anyone tell you that Rocket League is simplistic or lacks longevity; the vibrant community that has grown up around Psyonix's masterpiece renders that viewpoint wholly incorrect. This is a game that rewards skilful play and perseverance, and new tactics and strategies seem to flow from each and every match you partake in. Only the occasional network niggle throws shade on this otherwise sublime release; the Switch has yet another must-have release to add to its awe-inspiring 2017 pile.
Rocket League made a lot of waves when it was first released on the PS4. Considering this Xbox One version has some add-ons packed in, it is, at the very least just as good if not just a touch better.
Relatively very minor gripes aside, Rocket League is a genuinely new type of game that provides addictive, enjoyable, skill-based fun that doesn't prevent new players from joining the fray and which never threatens to become dull. Even folks who aren't necessarily excited by football, sports in general, or cars will find something to love here and for many, it'll become their new favourite pastime. This is absolutely superb and will keep you entertained for many, many hours.

Regardless of how you feel about “sports” games, you should really give Rocket League a punt. Easy to play and outrageous fun, this is a game that will surely enter the stable of games that you never quite get bored of no matter how much you play them. With the new Ranked Season starting at the end of the month, there’s nothing stopping you too becoming obsessed with whispering “goal, goal, goal” whenever the ball flies anywhere that isn’t your own net.
Rocket League is a fun and addicting battle cars sports game with lots of intensity and great core mechanics that proves to be a great sports video game of 2015. Overall, Rocket League is a fun and addicting sports game and a great eSports title addition. The game’s optimization is very impressive, core mechanics are easy to learn and to get by, and the stunning graphics which overlooks the lack of LAN feature and still makes this game a great candidate for Best Sports Game of 2015.
People love football (or soccer) and people love cars. Will people love Rocket League – the game that merges the two?
Within a few hours of playing Rocket League, I had amassed plenty of “holy shit, did you see that?!” moments, both accidental and intentional. It’s easy to see why the game’s popularity has spread like wildfire despite little to no pre-release buzz. It’s easy to pick up, nearly impossible to put down, and tuned to perfection. All the fat, all the bullshit that may have overcomplicated the game’s design has been sliced off, and what’s left is a pure, thrilling competitive experience.
Rocket League is mechanically simple, but utterly brilliant because of it.
I didn’t go in expecting much from Rocket League since I’m usually not a huge fan of driving and sports games. Instead of walking away with a confirmed bias, Psyonix’s laser-focused concept gave me something fun to whip out the next time I have friends over. I imagine with a bunch of awful beer and willing companions, we’ll have a great time. What’s next, will I enjoy a game that mixes Metroids and Soccer? We’ll see.

Rocket League is the most moreish multiplayer game since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Psyonix's vehicular soccer simulation adeptly illustrates the idea that simple concepts can succeed when expertly executed. And while it may have taken an entire generation for the seeds sewn by underrated PlayStation 3 exclusive Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars to truly take hold, we suspect that this leftfield local and online team-based hit will be boosting into some Game of the Year lists once the final whistle blows on 2015.
Bar this one niggling issue, everything else about Rocket League is superb. Sure, Psyonix could have perhaps been a bit more daring yet the safe route has certainly paid off. With the foundation now set, hopefully the developer will start to experiment as it begins rolling out the first of its free content updates.
Rocket League is one of the best multiplayer experiences of this generation. The single player pales in comparison, but with the joy-riddled social chaos Rocket League has on offer, any solo campaign would.
