Earth Defense Force 6 is one of those games that I will never get tired of, as I have gone back to every single game in the series time and time again. As a whole, Earth Defense Force deserves way more attention, and I can't imagine there's anyone who wouldn't like it. If you like cheesy dialogue, giant monsters/bugs, and shooting progressively crazier weaponry, give this one a shot.

Though I will always have a soft spot for the Cold Steel games, Trails Through Daybreak arrives as the new best game of the series. Between giving a more mature protagonist and redefining the combat, the Calvard arc starts with its best foot forward. The fact that things have already become this hectic with the very first game means we're looking at probably the craziest arc to date. Sadly, these take a bit of time to localize, and we'll be two behind in September, but I will be right there when the next one hits.

Helldivers 2

The beauty of Helldivers 2 is in its simplicity. You're just a single soldier tasked with the impossible job of contributing to a whole galaxy's defense. But that's also where the game shines, as you don't play Commander Shepard or someone massively important. You're essentially just a grunt who survives long enough to get better gear and further fulfill their duty. Whether you want to sink hours into the war effort or just take on a few missions, this game is perfect for as much or as little as you want to give it.

I can't exactly sell Infinite Wealth as an easily accessible JRPG for anyone to enjoy. It's a dense game with at least a 100-hour story for players to undertake. However, if you're willing to brave the time commitment, there's an amazing story here that feels like the most fitting wrap-up for anyone who has loved Kazuma Kiryu throughout the series' story. I don't know where a possible ninth game might take the series, but it's been an incredible experience getting here.

If you're a fan of the Aliens universe and want a closer approximation of what being boots on the ground during an outbreak would be, Dark Descent is probably your best option on the market. There's something for everyone, whether you are doing this for the strategy aspect or just to enjoy an Aliens story from a fresh perspective.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum doesn't do anything fun or interesting than similar (better) games like A Plague Tale: Innocence and Requiem. To be honest, this feels like a game made just to ensure the publisher could retain rights to the IP. It's hard to say if even the most loyal Lord of the Rings fans would actually find something worthwhile here. Considering good Lord of the Rings games exist, this one feels incredibly out of place.

LEGO 2K Drive
3.5

Lego 2K Drive is a neat little racing game with quite possibly the coolest car creation tools I have ever encountered. While I find myself unable to make anything besides the most rudimentary vehicle, there will be some astonishing creations in the game before long. Despite some issues with side activities, this is still a decent game if you want to ditch the realistic racing games for bricks on wheels.

Dead Island 2
4.0

Dead Island 2 should serve as a shining example for both games that make it out of development hell and sequels with a long time gap. Unlike in some cases, I didn't just get a zombie game that was given the Dead Island title slapped on it, I actually got more of the game I wanted. I'm sure some of my love for the original is down to nostalgia, and I could probably never return to it. However, it turns out that whenever I have thought about the first game in my head over the last decade, Dead Island 2 is absolutely the game I have pictured. If only more sequels could be this expertly made.

Scars Above was a surprisingly short game, but the sci-fi story it tells is interesting enough. While it seems from the outside to borrow many soul-like ideas, the game does enough differently to set itself apart.

Blacktail provides an excellent foray into Slavic folklore and some terrific bow-based combat. You get to follow the journey of a timid teenager as she learns to stand on her own two feet while also handing a solid smackdown to some really cool boss fights. There's more than enough depth here to keep you coming back to the game.
