Latest Reviews

Summing things up, Whilst looking nice, the game is overly complex and pretty boring.  If you don’t care about the story, characters, mythology, or plot branches which are on display from the start of each act, this soon becomes a slog to play through.  If you are a fan of the genre, this would be worth checking out if it comes to Game Pass, but I cannot recommend buying it.  Coming from Don’t Nod, this is a disappointing game.

Killer Frequency
7.0

Rounding things off, Killer Frequency is a good use of your gaming time.  It is well-written, nicely voice-acted, fairly short, and can be seriously creepy at times.  Fans of slasher films will have a blast playing this.  While I think it would probably be best experienced in VR, it is worth experiencing on a console.

Planet of Lana
9.0

Planet Of Lana is a truly cinematic puzzle adventure as advertised.  The package as a whole is delivered perfectly and leaves you wanting more upon completion.  With out-of-this-world visuals, music, sound and puzzle variety this really is an ‘Off-Earth Odyssey’ that you cannot afford to miss.  Developers Wishfully just delivered an indie masterpiece.

Road 96: Mile 0
6.0

Rounding things off, Road 96: Mile 0 may be an interesting experience to anyone new to the universe but can hardly be classed as an essential play.  Mixing rhythm gaming sections into the standard walking simulator gameplay is somewhat jarring and frankly unnecessary.  It may have been a better idea to release a standalone title for rhythm fans than taint the gameplay style that had worked so well previously.  This game can easily be avoided without really missing out on anything, especially for fans of the original game for whom the narrative is already flawed.  If it comes to Game Pass it is worth checking out but disappointingly, I cannot recommend buying it.

5.0

Rounding things off I think it is fair to say that Deliver Us Mars is a frustrating experience and somewhat of a let-down compared to Deliver Us The Moon.  While the environmental art style, musical score, platforming and accessibility settings are of a high standard, far too many aspects of the game are poor.  This becomes even worse when you consider that this is the glitchiest game I have ever played on my Xbox Series X.

Like a Dragon: Ishin!
9.0

What more can I say?  Like A Dragon: Ishin! deserves its acclaimed reputation and can only have been improved by this modernising makeover.  The story, visuals, sound design, and game mechanics are all top-class.  Complexity is the name of the game as usual, but fans of the series will have no complaints about what has been delivered here.  Everything that gamers love about the series has been included and improved upon to freshen things up.  Even the use of familiar faces feels right when it could have seemed very wrong.  For fans and newcomers alike, this game is a triumph and needs to be experienced.  PLAY THIS GAME.

The Pathless

7.0

Rounding things off, The Pathless has a nice visual design and cleverly designed puzzles to solve.  The movement mechanic is different but may not be to everyone’s taste and could even be off-putting for some.  My main issue is that once gameplay has been established in the first and second sections it is pretty much repeated for the remainder of the game.  I am sure that there are people out there (completionists especially) who will love this game as it is, but I cannot help but feel that a bit more inventiveness and a less cliché story would have made it much better.

To wrap things up Wavetale is a heart-warming story of discovery and reconciliation.  Traversal of the islands requires players to overcome some rather creative platforming challenges and never gets repetitive.  Although it takes a while to get going, the story is well written and the adaptive music and environmental design of Strandville bring the place to life.  This title has a lot going for it and although it is not the longest experience, it is well worth several hours of your time.

6.5

In conclusion, NORCO is a bit of a mixed bag.  Whilst it looks and sounds stunning it is let down by a story that pushes itself so far out there that it has no way of coming back.  Although already critically acclaimed this could be one of those games that is far more beloved of reviewers than the people who actually play it.  Only time will tell.  At least its availability on Game Pass means that it can be picked up and easily dropped if it turns out not to be your cup of tea.

In conclusion, without a doubt, this is the best Dark Anthology game so far and a true climax to season one.  Not only fans of the series but fans of the genre will love playing this.  The acting, visual detail, sound design and writing could not be bettered here.  Series mechanics have not only been improved but also extended delivering an extra level of depth to a fantastic experience.  In short developer, Supermassive Games has delivered a horror classic that will keep players on the edge of their seats for hours.
