NetherRealm Studios had two jobs with Injustice 2. Job one: Embrace the opportunity to tell one of the most exciting superhero stories ever. Job two: Deliver a fresh and exciting fighting game in a market that is shadowed by three giants of the genre that are rarely rivaled. The good news is, Injustice 2 does more than smash expectations, but obliterates them into vapour as if they were struck by Superman’s heat vision.
Strafe wears its influences on its sleeve as a retro, first-person shooter on permanent ‘screw you’ mode. The game brings unrelenting waves of nostalgia from legendary games like Doom and Quake.
In the past, Sniper Ghost Warrior games have come under fire for how linear they can be, and how much hand-holding goes on throughout the games, guiding you through basic levels with enemies to eliminate from point A to point B. But CI games have ditched the linear formula for their next entry into the series, aptly named Sniper Ghost Warrior 3. In this iteration the developers have adopted a more open world style to the game.
As a gamer, the idea of racing down snowy mountain slopes on a plank of fibreglass with less than half a second between the reality of my face being smashed into a tree or staying how it is, has never really been something that appeals to me. However, if I can do that in the comfort of my bedroom in my track-pants with my blanket wrapped around me with little to no risk of face smashing, then sign me up!
It’s time to get big air in this new snowboard simulator: Mark McMorris Infinite Air. Pro snowboarder Mark McMorris lends his name to this freestyle snowboarding game, where you can explore a vast backcounty and carve your way through the mountain slopes or take part in big air events… or maybe test your skills in the snow parks. Unfortunately, in Infinite Air, you are actually pretty restricted to what air you can get. They should have called the game Mark McMorris: Limited Air.
Another year goes by and there’s one thing you can be sure of that will come along with it: FIFA is back. Sadly, FIFA 17 is only a slight upgrade on last years FIFA 16. Some new gameplay elements that players have been asking for have been included, like improved throw-ins, low shots at goal, and keeper controlled kicks. Not necessarily very exciting if you’re looking for a reason to pick up FIFA over the many other sport sims that are out there.
NBA2K17 oozes realness and it’s very clear that it’s a game put together by a team that are passionate and that live and breathe basketball. So much work has gone into this years installment in the series, right through from the detailed animation of the NBA stars to the fluid ease of movement allowing you to dash around the court and get stuck into thumping your rivals.
LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is a breath of fresh air for the Lego series. I still remember when the first adaptation type Lego game came out and how bizarre I found it, and you know what? I still find it bizarre… but I have to admit, I find them damn enjoyable.
Not quite a sequel to the first; Homefront: The Revolution serves as more of a reboot. The problem is… was anybody asking for one? Now, I know I sound sour, but when I heard that this game was being made I actually was quite excited.
