1000xRESIST is a brilliantly conceived and written piece of dystopian fiction that delves into difficult topics with layers of nuance and introspection. What it lacks in gameplay is more than made up for by the storytelling, the visuals, the soundtrack, the characters, the music… just, everything. Play this game.
Every year, there are games that are, in the minds of some, criminally underrated and not given the credit they deserve, whether by the large-scale media, awards season, or public tone. For a certain subset of narrative indie game fans, last year's underrated game was 1000xResist by a new Canadian studio, Sunset Visitor.
With a dense and mysterious storyline, this is a game that stands out, even though it is technically simple.
1000xResist is developer Sunset Visitor wearing its experiences on its sleeve, debuting a beautiful, heartfelt game with one of the best-written stories we’ve ever experienced. Switch port and minor gameplay issues aside, this stands as one of the most memorable games we’ve ever played. Confident in its convictions and empathetic with its words, 1000xResist is an important piece of art and a testament to the creativity of indie developers.

2024 was a stacked year for video games, making 1000xRESIST easy to miss (even for indie game fans like me). If your 2025 resolution is to check out any cool 2024 games you missed, 1000xRESIST is worth a shot if you desire a compelling narrative and can endure clumsy gameplay. The game is also not very long (I finished this ten-chapter game in about twelve hours), so you’ll still have plenty of time to play 2025’s offerings. 1000xRESIST is a diamond in the rough that, despite its flaws, I’m glad I experienced.

Taking this surreal journey on Switch 2 in no way diminishes the sheer brilliance of 1000xRESIST. Playing out like a deeply personal, interactive cinematic parable, it quickly draws you into moral questions about self-determination, trust, and the consequences of living under someone else’s control. Despite its fatalistic opening, the pivotal choices you make give you a profound sense of agency. For me, that is what turns this emotional sci-fi drama into an absolute must-play masterpiece.
