A Fisherman's Tale is still great four years later, but if you've played it before there's not much reason to pick up this barebones port to the PS VR2. It would've been cool to see InnerspaceVR take the opportunity to flesh out its recursive puzzle concept even more, but hopefully there's more still to come from this franchise.
While A Fisherman’s Tale is shorter than many people’s daily commute to work, its abundance of charm and clever use of the core puzzling mechanic make it a VR title worth cozying up with on weekend afternoon.
A Fisherman’s Tale is a different take on what seems to be becoming a popular VR experience: the diorama-like puzzle game. In most of these, you are presented with a beautiful dioramic scene in a story book setting. You can pull closer, push further, rotate and manipulate the scene as you search for and obtain clues and items. But A Fisherman’s Tale adds a unique twist. You are both the manipulator and the manipulate-ee.

Fishing in VR would be great, wouldn't it? While fishing video games have been around for decades, there’s a spirit to the sport that only VR could truly capture. Lounging around in a little wooden fishing boat and basking in nature while waiting for your next catch to nibble at your line would be made that much more relaxing when you’re completely immersed in your surroundings. A Fisherman’s Tale is certainly immersive, but it almost couldn’t have less to do with the act of fishing - you don’t touch a single fishing pole in its entire runtime. It’s instead yet another VR puzzler that still manages to delight courtesy of its quippy charm, neat gimmick, and effective setpieces that don’t overstay their welcome.
A fascinating premise that is used not only to create a set of mind-bending puzzles but to ruminate on the nature of reality. It’s just a shame about the controls and the short running time.
