As I finally wrap up my review, I feel that I am honing in on the reasons why it took me so long. I admire the hell out of Baba is You, but eventually, the jumps in logic made my experience less fun, and I fell out of the game hard. Baba is You is a game that I want to hang up on a frame or in a trophy case, point out to visitors and say "yeah, that's a great game, and you should try it." But given any free time in the future, I can't imagine that I'd revisit it for very long, knowing how badly it will bust my brain up.

I'm not going to pretend to have finished it. I'm hoping this is a game I'll keep playing for a long time, picking away at puzzles, and then desperately hoping for extra levels to be added later. But this is wonderful. Completely wonderful. Original, inspired, challenging, and most importantly of all, that constant sense of "Oh no, how will I ever do this one!" so quickly followed by, "I AM A GENIUS!" It's a very, very smart game, that has the humility to let you, the player, feel like the clever one.

Even so, as uneventful its music may seem, it does little to sway the view that Baba Is You is an outstandingly inventive and delightful puzzle game to crack. A game that is as anarchic as it is orderly in its logic-based intentions, seldom do the easy-to-grasp mechanics and calculating demeanour of its appearance, run tired or stale despite its simple concept of mere block pushing. Resulting in one surprising or unexpected turn of events after another. But what's more deserving of its praise, beyond the chemical-like concocting of altered elements and functions, is the game's continued unpred...

Puzzle games have always been one of my favorite genres, and I love exercising my mind by coming up with creative solutions to solve them. Although, I feel like many games rely on the same kinds of tricks and puzzle types as those that have been around for decades. Titles like The Talos Principle, The Spectrum Retreat, and Portal, have all found success by having a compelling narrative or dark humor to go alongside their puzzle focused gameplay. However, at the end of they day they still play...

Early puzzles in Baba is You are a series of personal epiphanies. With a limited tutorial, I immediately understood how the game works, why its weird name makes perfect sense, and how moving even just one block the right way can make everything change. I felt brilliant as I transformed the properties of each puzzle to get the win – but then things got complicated.
