Bladed Fury Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
If you’re on the market for an action-packed 2D side-scroller on PC, you really should check out Bladed Fury. It looks wonderful, plays well, and has plenty of content for its humble price. Among the hundreds, if not thousands, of shovelware titles on Steam it’s a bit of a gem. It’s not quite able to compete with Vanillaware’s finest as its combat just lacks a tiny bit of polish in comparison, but it comes very close. And that’s very much an achievement for its developer, NEXT Studios.
Bladed Fury doesn’t break any new ground, but it’s got its 2D hack and slash fundamentals down to a science. Its beautiful hand-drawn art style and great enemy designs bring its mythological rendition of ancient China to life, even when its story fails to.
Bladed Fury, now out on Steam, is a feast for the eyes. Stunningly detailed, hand-crafted artwork carries the player through a tale of a princess framed by demons. You play as Ji, Princess to a kingdom where everything seems fine. You and your sister hang out most days and things seem chill.
This PC port of Bladed Fury brings the good with the bad: a beautiful animated art style akin to Samurai Jack that lacks distinction in both combat and level design. It’s hack and slash combo system adds depth through replayability challenge modes and boss rush modes but is otherwise repetitive in single playthroughs. Along with that, the game suffers from occasional lag and stutters, and I even experienced a single hard crash. Bladed Fury is worth checking out as its run time is short and the story tells of the rich Asian culture that is the warring states period, but ultimately it stumbles…
