Brawlout is a pretty fun Smash Bros.-esque fighter that's quite a bit more fast paced. While the roster selection is small, and the unlockable characters are similar or just alternate versions of the original lineup, the fast-paced action and unique moves for each character make this a pretty fun game to play with friends, either at home or online.

The other issue of concern is that Brawlout, although a solid entry into the genre doesn’t really inject anything new into the genre. As mentioned it is a solid offering with streamlined combat and for the most part quite accessible to gamers. Yet I wonder what will keep people playing it when the next great brawler enters the arena. For Switch players, it’s safe to project that we will see some f...

The Nintendo Switch has become a fantastic stage for new indie darlings to make a statement, but Brawlout has some particularly large issues to address. For one thing, it’s undoubtedly going to be compared to a certain Nintendo brawler franchise, that comparison coming bundled with some lofty expectations. Brawlout doesn’t quite reach that bar, but it does prove itself to be a fighter worthy of re...

Brawlout’s core action is a lot of fun; with a huge amount of ideas inspired by genre greats such as Super Smash Bros., the action feels tight, fast, and can be a pleasure to play. The limited character roster means that attack variations can only go so far, and some performance hiccups prevent Brawlout from being truly wonderful, but for an on-the-go, cheaper alternative to a game that hasn’t eve...

Brawlout is positioning itself as the sort of indie Smash, especially with its addition of Hyper Light Drifter and Juan into the mix. With proper post-launch support, and most importantly, an audience, it could grow and fill that Bowser-sized hole that Smash Wii U left. Until then it’ll serve as a fun party game that could be a little more.

Brawlout is fundamentally a great take on the Smash Bros. format, and they’ve nailed the weight of the characters, movement, and the pure fun that getting four players together for some combative carnage can bring. Unfortunately the limited roster and the unrewarding grind of the in-game store can temper that somewhat, but as a starting point for a new indie fighting franchise there’s a lot here t...

In its current state, Brawlout is a competent Smash clone. While its frantic and deep mechanics are a fun time for competitive types, the overall lack of features can make the game feel empty at times. However, with promised updates and patches, this game could take the spot as one of the better fighting games on the Switch.

Smash Bros. is weird. Nintendo’s fighting mashup drew the masses in with the promise of seeing what would happen if Yoshi were to get really upset with Kirby. Hardcore fans developed a splinter scene, where ultra-competitive players stripped the game to its essence – no items, Final Destination only, thank you very much – squeezing every last drop of strategic gameplay from the cutesy title. The s...

It's going to be near impossible to write this review without at least mentioning Super Smash Bros., so let's just get it out of the way. Brawlout is essentially Super Smash Bros. It takes the skeleton of Nintendo's hugely popular fighter but obviously adds its own character roster. Each combatant has a damage percentage that rises as they get hit, and the higher it is, the farther they fly after ...

I am this game’s target audience in almost every way. Brawlout has emerged from the still growing Super Smash Bros. competitive scene, with a small group of devs around the world that have turned Smash’s mechanics into the platform fighter genre. Brawlout’s proposal is as simple as it gets for Smash fans; online versus, no items, no stage hazards, arcade modes, unlockable characters and costumes. ...

A brawl that stumbles.

If like me you own a Nintendo Switch then you’ll likely agree that it’s been missing one thing since its launch last year, a ‘Smash’ genre type game. Well Brawlout by developer Angry Mob Games is here to fix all of our woes. After hitting PC back in April last year it is now making its way to consoles and what better console for a Smash Bros clone than the Nintendo Switch!
