The Purrfect Way to Experience Bubsy
Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection is an impressive collection in terms of presentation, bonus content, and emulation. The only issue is that the games included are not especially fun at their core. If you have nostalgia for Bubsy the Bobcat or an interest in game preservation, this is a strong collection, but otherwise, you probably won’t get too much out of this.
Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection is complete with lacklustre platformers and a set of bonus features that are hit and miss.
The Bubsy series gets by on Looney Tunes style visuals, and 90s ‘tude charm. And even those aspects won’t be for everyone. Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection is a package of three below-average 2D mascot platformers, and one very early 3D platformer. They’re not good games, and they haven’t aged well. But Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection is an incredibly loving and complete package of everything Bubsy. Anyone with nostalgic love for this series will be over the moon. I just don’t think Bubsy’s gonna make any new fans any time soon.
Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection bundles up four games that are all varying degrees of bad, with Bubsy 3D being the worst of the lot. It is cheap, however, and has extras that fans of the bobcat will no doubt appreciate. Make of that what you will.
One wonders if the entire Bubsy series wasn’t actually designed as a sort of torture parody; that the intention all along was to pummel unsuspecting children into submission via an innocent-looking, anthropomorphic-bobcat-led platform game. That kid either never forgave his parents for the injustice and the playground bullying they endured as a result, or they committed fully to the Bubsy universe and found a happy place within it. If ...
Oh Bubsy. Bubsy the freaking Bobcat. Why are you a thing? Why are we still talking about you, nonstop, to this very day? Are we still facing the consequences of that one JonTron video from a decade and a half ago? Is this the reason this silly failed mascot is still somewhat known by gamers? After the release of two failed revivals a few years ago, I thought we had actually seen the last of the Bubsy franchise, but with Atari now owning the IP, we are not only getting a brand new Bubsy game f...
Like a cockroach continuing to return from sales situations that have killed many better series, Bubsy In: The Purrfect Collection packs all of the bobcat’s “classic” games into a bundle, including the various console versions for each release, and even a refurbished version for its worst game. Also included are the standard save states, rewind, borders, and CRT filters you would expect for games returning from the ‘90s. Super fans can also check out the museum for some art, interviews, and more.
