Overall, Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered does feel like a very solid rendition of the game, but it has many drawbacks. The option to ignore Multiplayer and Spec ops takes out almost all replayability the game could have.  It is absolutely not worth its current price point for a few hours of occasionally great but often mediocre gameplay. Furthermore, while it attempts to be faithful to the source material, it comes off as sometimes dull and sullies part of what made the campaign so special all those years ago.

Time has been kind to Modern Warfare 2. The resonance of this particular entry is demonstrated with heartfelt passion in Beenox’ high-gloss, finely-tuned remaster. While the overall package is slim and the asking price no doubt steep for some tastes, there’s no denying that MW 2‘s provocative and exciting campaign has aged like wine, an explosive roller-coaster still worth riding.

We don’t need to remind you that Call of Duty is possibly the biggest gaming franchise of the past decade or so, even though a lot of gamers look at the series with disdain nowadays. The weak campaigns (or lack thereof), the yearly releases, the ridiculous plots almost always portraying foreigners as villains, and of course, the microtransactions have slowly deteriorated Call of Duty‘s relevance as a serious franchise, placing it more as yearly dumb fun release alongside the likes of FIFA...

Which Call of Duty has the best campaign? If you’ve been around since the series really started to get popular, you’ve definitely heard this question before. It’s not an easy answer either as, no matter what naysayers may think, there have been plenty of quality Call of Duty games, but the answer that’s most often been thrown around is Modern Warfare 2. Released at the peak of last generation’s Call of Duty hype, it seemed like the series couldn’t ever really get away from the fantastic highs of snowmobile chases and Burger Town shootouts.

A competent remaster of a story mode that, while it still has the ability to impress, feels old-fashioned, shallow, and grossly overpriced.

Thank goodness for all of its memorable, Michael Bay-style blockbuster moments, because in 2020 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is competing for our attention with its own very impressive reboot. In that light, the generic shooting-gallery gameplay of Modern Warfare 2’s campaign feels dated – after so many games we’re onto the magician’s trick now. The new Modern Warfare has largely pushed the series past this for the better. So while this remaster is still a fun ride that looks impressively current, it’s lost a lot of its punch. Some of that is due to the advances of time, but it’s mostly because it’s been bested by...itself.
