Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
With how much has changed in Destiny, it's hard to see the forest through the trees. Everything I thought I knew, from what was good to what to focus on, has been overhauled. This was initially jarring, but the longer I spend with it, the more I come to like it. Much like the start of a new show, you can tell there is something more; however, you're only left with more questions. While this explanation is small, the universe it opens is vast.
Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate is a solid, entertaining, and intriguing debut for the Fate Saga, answering many questions but leaving many more to be explored later.
Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate is a rough start to the Year of Prophecy, but one that still shows signs of promise below some of its disappointing features. The overhaul to some systems is excellent, and the combat remains top-notch, but many issues hold back what could've been a great new beginning.
The Edge of Fate feels a little stale in the gameplay department, but plants some interesting seeds for Destiny 2's ongoing narrative.
The Final Shape is a tough act to follow. Last year’s big expansion to Destiny 2 provided an epic and satisfying conclusion to a decade of storytelling and gameplay. As Bungie’s shooter charts a path to content that moves in a fresh direction, it was always going to be a challenge to hit the mark. But even setting aside the potentially unfair comparison, The Edge of Fate is a letdown. For the first time since the original Destiny launched, I finished exploring the ins and outs of this new...
Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate isn’t the worst expansion the looter shooter’s been given, but it’s a major step back from The Final Shape in almost every regard, mixing content that’s simply more of the same with a few experiments here and there that don’t always work out.
It's a new era for Destiny 2 and Bungie as a whole, and it shows with The Edge of Fate's scale. However, the execution, especially in new systems like Matterspark, leaves much to be desired.
In this brave new world of Destiny, a new saga begins, and major shifts and changes alter the very systems on which the Guardians stand and progress. Unfortunately, these are changes I’m going to have to sit out until they get dialed in over the coming weeks and months. This game has been a constant in my rotation for nearly 10 years. But it now demands time that I just don’t have to give, offers rewards that aren’t worth the heavy investment, and promises to reset the clock and devalue that commitment every six months. The shooter part of Destiny is still excellent, but I’ll check back in Dec...
The Edge of Fate is the most whelming Destiny 2 expansion of all time. There are additions, sure, but there aren’t any real innovations that deepen the D2 experience the way The Final Shape, or even Lightfall, did. Unless you like turning into a little ball and rolling around, of course.
Writing this review exhausted me. I was hoping a new saga of Destiny 2 might get me excited for what’s next. Instead, I’m tired. The skill to make cool stuff still exists at Bungie, but it’s being catastrophically misused. Design and mechanical changes need to be more thoroughly considered, and the entire player base needs to be brought along for the ride. If Bungie leadership is reading this part: please. Give your people the time, space, and freedom to create something incredible. They have the capacity, and they need your support. This franchise can find its footing again, but Bungie needs ...
2024 marked a massive milestone for the Destiny franchise, marking the series' ten-year anniversary and the end of the Light and Darkness saga. Destiny 2: The Final Shape felt like a definitive end, closing numerous open story threads amidst a final clash with The Witness. Yet, it is not the end, as Bungie has made clear the story will continue in the new Fate Saga. Starting with Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, Bungie hopes to usher in an exciting new era for Destiny 2 by taking players to an all-new location with new mechanics, characters and threats waiting to destroy Sol. Does Destiny 2: T...
