Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
The strategy RPG series has never been better in the latest entry.
Few franchises can get away with feeling this similar from version to version, but Disgaea is just that deep, requiring you to understand and exploit character stats, equipment attributes, and class abilities at a level most modern RPGs have abandoned in the name of accessibility. Disgaea 5’s many new and tweaked gameplay features hit way more often than they miss, and together with its distinctive brand of campy fun and some subtle but welcome visual improvements, they make this one of the better Disgaeas.
Disgaea 5 is one of the premier strategy/tactical role-playing games. It is the best game in the series, mechanically, offering a lot of content and possibly 100+ hours of enjoyment.
Almost too much of a good thing.
Beneath its lackluster story, Disgaea 5 is crawling with stuff to do and, thanks to its great gameplay, you’ll always find yourself itching to come back for more.
Overall, this is another solid entry in what is effectively the pinnacle of the strategy RPG genre. Like the games before it, Disgaea 5 provides plenty of laughs, a large dose of strategy action and a humongous amount of content. If you’re the type of person that just likes to play through the main campaign of a game then Disgaea 5 will entertain enough to warrant the asking price, but just don’t expect a riveting or altogether coherent story. However, if you’re the type of player that sees the campaign as a starting point, then Disgaea 5 will possibly be the best purchase you can make on PS4 ...
The least funny Disgaea yet, but arguably the best in terms of the actual gameplay – even if there is a lack of genuinely new ideas.
