Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord is a sequel game to the original Fairy Fencer F but with a totally new combat system. It is a competent strategy Role Playing Game and not overly difficult. The music mechanics make it stand out and a joy to listen to. The relationship between characters is not really explored as heavily as the first game.
I have good news for my fellow niche RPG fans because a familiar cast is back in a new tactical RPG with Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord.
Along with his companions, Fang is on a journey to find the Furies, and resurrect the Goddess. One day, he encounters a woman who can save people with her song, and another who can brainwash people with her song. Along with the mysterious power of the women who call themselves Muses, Fang's destiny begins to unfold... PC version reviewed.
It’s hard to tell who, exactly, Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord is for.
Some years after Fairy Fencer F's debut, Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord gives it a full follow-up. The inspiration of the muses provides the series with some future promise.
Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord aims to take the series in a bold new direction with a new tactical combat system while continuing the story from 2013's Fairy Fencer F. However, while there are things to enjoy, a lack of innovation in many of the game's core areas leaves it feeling barren, predictable and frustrating. Here's our review of Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord for Nintendo Switch.
Like the first two games, Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord is flawed, tonally inconsistent, and a massively repetitive grind. Re-treading this story for the third time and jump to an entirely different and less enjoyable gameplay system has made it even harder to recommend this game in spite of it's flaws. There is charm, and there are moments, and diehard Compile Heart fans might be able to push through and enjoy them, but I suspect that the people this game will truly speak to are few and far between.
