Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is addictive and has numerous quality of life improvements for the genre. It might suffer from a slow start and repetitious voiceover work, but that’ll fade away and you’ll soon find yourself lost in its systems and loving every minute.

A fisher. A woodcutter. An artist. A farmer. A hunter. A Paladin. A hero. Fantasy Life I: The Girl Who Steals Time is the sequel to the cult-classic Nintendo 3DS life simulation game, where you can take on many jobs and live multiple lives. Now, after a few delays and a lengthy wait, the latest Level-5-developed joint is finally released on multiple platforms, with high hopes weighing on it. Fantasy Life originally released in 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS and since then, the series’ output has been a bit dry. There have been mobile releases in between, but Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is the first proper sequel after all this time to the this neat hybrid between a JRPG and a slice-of-life simulator. That’s right, in a world filled with every roguelike, deckbuilder and metroidvania you could imagine (often times mixing these three styles at once), Fantasy Life provide...

Fantasy Life I: The Girl Who Steals Time is a lovingly crafted and well-deserved glow up for one of the shining stars of the 3DS era. The visuals, score and overall presentation have been elevated beyond recognition, and yet, the things that made the original great remain intact. The abundance of gameplay mechanics and variety via the different islands and time periods is a standout feature that makes the endless grind paletable, and while every action in the game borders on basic, it never crosses the threshold to be considered boring. It's a quintessentially cozy game that deserves its flowe...

I loved playing the first Fantasy Life game to an unhealthy degree, and the sequel is no different. Grinding away to master all the Lives is deeply satisfying, there’s a wide variety of systems to mess with, and the overall pace is very chill. On the other hand, I recognize that much of what I love about this game isn’t necessarily good, it’s mostly just addictive. A mishmash of my favorite dopamine receptors are getting smashed to bits when I play this game, and I’m fine with that. If you’re looking for a cozy, compelling Skinner box of a game, Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is perf...

Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is oozing with charm and bursting with activities. While it all feels a little shallow, the constant feeling of progress is great and there’s a ton to customize. The story isn’t great, but it doesn’t need to be when there’s always something to do around the next corner.

Is this the real life? Is this just Fantasy Life?

Jun 2, 2025 Read Review

Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is a good revival of a series that delivers as much content as possible to its fans. However, this can be a detriment as parts feel unfocused or too disparate to work together. Regardless, the charming nature of the title shines above all else, and with so much here, there is something for everyone to fall in love with.
